Jerry Springer - Friend of Liberty

Find out YOUR political position ->

Long-time St. Louis libertarian activist Ken Bush says his hobby is encountering celebrities and prominent folks and discussing libertarianism with them. So when Jerry Springer -- the notorious bad boy of tabloid TV -- came to St. Louis to sell his new book "Ringmaster" in late 1998, Ken was there. Ken asked Springer if he was a libertarian. Springer nodded his head affirmatively.

Ken was a bit skeptical, so he gave Springer a short summary of what libertarians believe in: civil liberties and economic freedom. Springer continued to affirm he was a libertarian. Springer also told Ken he has a long-time passion for political science and current events, and would like to teach political science at a university after his television days are over. Springer, incidentally, has a law degree, served on the Cincinnati city council and was elected mayor in 1977.

Springer's daytime ratings in 1998-1999 have been higher than the previous ratings winner, Oprah Winfrey. His raucous show has been widely attacked by critics. Springer shrugs off such attacks, saying, "It's just a show. It's not the end of Western Civilization. It's chewing gum." Prior to his notorious talk show career, Springer won 10 Emmy awards as a local newscaster.

In his pre-talk show years, Springer’s politics, as a candidate and as news commentator, were decidedly big-government liberal.
