The
six Mickey Rawlings books (Soos is hard at work on number seven now)
have been praised by top reviewers including Publishers Weekly, the New
York Times, Booklist, USA Today Baseball Weekly, and many, many more. The
latest in the series is Hanging Curve (Sept. 1999). Set in 1922, the
novel focuses largely on Negro League baseball and the resurgent Ku Klux
Klan, as Rawlings investigates the lynching of a Negro League pitcher. According
to Booklist, "The sixth Mickey Rawlings mystery is the strongest in
the series. Soos delivers a richly atmospheric journey through time with
Rawlings serving as an engaging guide." The
other Mickey Rawlings books are Murder at Fenway Park, Murder at Ebbets
Field, Murder at Wrigley Field, Hunting a Detroit Tiger, and The
Cincinnati Red Stalkings. Soos
is a baseball lover who originally wanted to be a baseball player, but
while in Little League he discovered he "had the baseball skills of
Agatha Christie." So he set out to find other ways to be involved
with baseball, including a two-year professional umpiring career He
describes writing the Mickey Rawlings mysteries as a fun way of
combining three of his interests: baseball history, American social
history, and mystery novels. Soos
is also author of the nonfiction book Before the Curse, an illustrated
history of early New England baseball. A member of Mystery Writers of
America, he has toured throughout the country, frequently speaks at
libraries and bookstores, and has made a number of television and radio
appearances. Soos says he's considered himself a libertarian for over 20 years.
