We need to put our hope in God - NOT GOVERNMENT - to turn back the tide of immorality in our nation. Comments: Seventh-day adventist: I feel that the 1st Amendment atempts to protect the peoples rights to religionous freedoms since the new world was founded on this idea. Sometimes people forget this and even believe that it was founded on a concept of "God" but if students of History will remember that it was the oppessive "church govt." that led people to flee the old world all will enbrace the Libertarian concepts of the freedom to worship in the many individual ways. As a Christian I can understand Christ's libertarian ideas but as a grad. of Roger Williams U. (Bristol RI) I can also understand that people of all faith (western, eastern, mid-east, ect) can and should be free to worship the Creator (ect) as they wish as long as it does hurt others (or force others to go against there beliefs).

Comments: The perfect Theocracy is Anarchy. Fundamentalist Christians and vitriolic non-Christians try to point out that the harsh punishments and edicts of the Old Testament, Deuteronomy, et al, demands an authoritative approach by believers towards politics and ethics. Both groups overlook that the Covenant is a TREATY, it is conceived the same way Ancient Mid East treaties were written circa 1200 B.C. The Law is an agreement between the Nation of Israel and YHWH, and not a prescriptive code for all peoples in all places in all times in a legalistic sense. God gave us free will, created us in a state of libertarian freedom to choose universal moral laws, and no flawed and inefficient state should intervene in enforcing those ethics on those who haven't "signed the treaties" of the Hebrew Bible and Gospels.

Comments: I highly recommend all Libertarian Christians to read Martin Luther's treatise on the Liberty of the Christian. Luther's writings are often overlooked by most Christians today, even many confessional Lutherans. Luther had much to say against the legalism of the Roman Catholic Church and the other Reformers known as "the enthusiasts". Although he knew many in nobility, and the church of his day was entangled in earthly kingdoms,he once said that "most Princes are Knaves". Luther opposed the political activism of the Anabaptist,Thomas Munzer.Luther wisely advised the peasants to forget about the shenanigans of the Princes and go back behind their plows and "glorify God in the work that you do". Those that followed Munzer and not Luther's advice were slaughtered by the Princes' army in the Peasants' Uprising of 1525. Martin Luther has been much maligned by phony,irresponsible journalists the likes of William Shirer.Hitler did not get his inspiration from Luther but from the pagan occultism rampant in Germany. Luther's criticims of the Jews were taken out of context. They were theological and not ethnic criticisms. A visiting Rabbi made the mistake of leaving a copy of the Talmud with Luther for him to read. Some Libertarians have wrongly accused Luther as being the founder of government schools with his advocation of public type schools. Bear in mind that the peasants of his day were functionally illiterate. When Luther translated the Bible into German and then wrote his Catechism, his intent was for the head of each household to be responsible for teaching basic Biblical truths. That sounds like parental responsibility to me and the basis for home schooling

Comments: A Christian Libertarian recently told me that Christianity and Libertarianism are perfect for each other. Jesus, he said, stands outside the door to your heart and knocks. It�s up to you to open the door and let him in. This, he explained, is very Libertarian because Jesus does not advocate the use force or coercion to convert you. But carry the thought further. If you don�t open your heart to Jesus and let him in, according to the Bible and many in orthodox and mainstream Christianity you go to Hell after you die. That seems extremely coercive and very non-Libertarian to me. So, is Christianity really libertarian or is it authoritarian? Perhaps it depends on how narrowly you compare the two. Food for thought.
