Understanding Temperament Types
with the Advocates Color-Coded Type Cards

Below are descriptions of each of the temperament-type cards.

NT-Green

NF-Blue

SJ-Gold

SP-Orange

After reading each one, pick the one that best describes you and the one that least describes you. This will give you an understanding of why you are attracted to libertarianism, and it will also show you which type you have the most difficulty communicating with.

The article "Unlocking the Secrets of Personality Types" will help you discover ways to communicate with the different types.

Green Card
Intuitive Thinker (NT)
"Science"

Key words:
objective, rational, logical, conceptual, curious,
competent, scientific, intelligent, knowledgeable, wise.

(An estimated 12% of the population are "Green cards.)

I need freedom to use my mind, to learn as much as possible and to become as competent as possible, by accumulating information, skills and capabilities. I believe life is something to be examined, made sense of, understood and explained. I seek knowledge and explanations so as to be able to predict what will happen in my environment and, therefore, be able to control it.

I have a low tolerance for what I perceive to be illogical or emotional thinking and this sometimes makes it difficult to interact with others.

I am somewhat of a perfectionist and a "workaholic." But for me, what others think of as "work," is "play." My mind works best with abstract principles, and I am an independent thinker. This leads me toward careers or projects that will challenge my mind, explore new ideas, search for explanations, build models and be innovative, i.e., the sciences, philosophy, engineering or architecture. Once I have perfected an idea, I tend to move on and leave details to others.

Since I decide with my head rather than my heart, I am accused of being unemotional and insensitive, although my feelings run deep and strong. I prefer straightforward, rather than complex relationships. I prefer not to have to repeat myself, so it is difficult to continue to express feelings to my partner after having once made my feelings clear.

I prefer not to be controlled by emotions, so I tend to establish a relationship and let it maintain itself while I turn my energies back to my career.

I have little respect for established authority; I prefer to reach my own conclusions. As a child I was impatient with drill and routine in school. I learn best by reading and independent research in situations that allow me to decide what is important and how to organize and deal with it.

I make decisions objectively, using logic and reason. I set high standards of performance for myself, and I expect and demand the same level of competence in others. My communications tend to be terse, compact and logical.

Blue Card
Intuitive Feeler (NF)
"Compassion"

Key words:
compassionate, caring, warm, communicative, cooperative, romantic, creative, sensitive,
harmonious.

(Only an estimated 12% of the population are "Blue cards.")

I need freedom to search for the meaning and significance of life, especially my own. I want my life to matter. I want to discover my true self and actualize my potential by becoming that true self. Integrity and honesty are important to me, and I am idealistic and spiritual by nature.

Although I need to develop and maintain my sense of uniqueness, I also continuously seek unity with others and make commitments to them that make me sometimes lose myself in what they want me to be.

I am creative, people-oriented and communicative and see potential and possibilities everywhere. I tend to want to influence others to help them develop their potential and lead more significant lives. This attracts me to the creative arts, writing, media, teaching and the helping professions such as nursing, counseling and psychotherapy. I tend to inspire others because I am good at motivating and interacting with them.

Harmonious relationships are most important to me. I am a true romantic who believes in perfect love, forever. In relationships, I bring drama, warmth and empathy. I enjoy giving and receiving the outward expressions of romance, such as flowers, music, candlelight, holding hands, poetry and love notes. Discord and violence are very distressing to me.

As a child, I was communicative, artistic and imaginative. I did not much care for the usual routine and structure of school and was highly sensitive to rejection or discord. I learned best when I received recognition from valued teachers and responded to encouragement rather than competition.

I tend to be sensitive and may get my feelings hurt easily. But I am also sensitive to others' feelings, so I am usually tactful, and I have a knack for making others feeling comfortable and accepted.

Living a life of significance - making a difference in the world - is extremely important to me. When I believe in a cause, I make a total commitment to it and may even dedicate my life to helping make an ideal become reality.

Gold Card
Sensory Judger (SJ)
"Organization"

Key words:

dependable, responsible, sensible, helpful, hard-working, stable, loyal, organized, practical, punctual, traditional.

(An estimated 38% of the population are "Gold cards.)

I need freedom to learn my duties and obligations and to fulfill them. I also must organize and structure my life in order to responsibly carry out my duties. I am practical, sensible, reliable, and punctual. I want to make myself useful and believe others should also.

I believe everyone should earn their way in life by work and service. I need to know that I belong and that I have earned my place in life and society. I work to carry my fair share of the burden even though others may not always appreciate my efforts and may take me for granted.

I am, by nature, parental and need to take care of others. This leads me to work in institutions and companies which are the foundations of society, such as teaching, banking, medicine, civil service, business and civic organization~. Because I seek and bring stability, I help these organizations function smoothly and efficiently. I make sure all the details are taken care of and this, along with my willingness to work hard, makes me the backbone of many organizations. To me, work comes before play and the Job must be finished properly before play begins.

Love, marriage and family are serious and important matters to me, and my views on them tend to be traditional. I believe home and family are particularly important and I want a mate willing to work with me to build a secure, predictable life together. I demonstrate love and affection through the practical things I do for my loved ones. I tend to be faithful, loyal and dependable.

I have a strong sense of right and wrong and want to know the rules and regulations to be followed. As a child, I adapted comfortably to structured school routines. I understood the need to follow the rules then as I do now. It frustrates me when lines of authority or rules and regulations are not made clear. .

I take a stand for traditional values, but I am usually not someone who "makes waves" or "rocks the boat."

If you need something to get done, I'm the one to call on: when I say I'll do something, you can be sure I'll do it.

Orange Card
Sensory Perceiver (SP)
"Action"

Key words:
spontaneous, active, adventuresome, risk-taking, competitive, flexible, cheerful, realistic, charming,
skillful, fun.

(An estimated 38% of the population are "Orange cards. )

I need freedom to act on impulse, spontaneously. For me, life is to be enjoyed, so I look for variety, excitement, anything fun. I like action just for action's sake, in the here and now rather than planning long-range for the distant future.

I am playful and lighthearted, yet possess great endurance. I am irrepressible. After a defeat, I expect to win at the next opportunity. I like adventure and competition and find myself challenged to take risks and test the limits of life. When obstacles block or delay my need to be involved in action, I become frustrated, impatient and unhappy.

Work that lets me be active in a variety of ways is best. Jobs that are' routine and structured can leave me bored and restless. I like being my own boss, especially as an entrepreneur.

I like to utilize my physical coordination and any kind of tools, which I experience as an extension of myself. Tools can be machinery, musical instruments, carpenter tools, athletic equipment, art supplies, airplanes, a scalpel or computer hardware. I feel good while performing, whether on the playing field, on stage, at a party or just in the spotlight of life.

In relationships, I want shared activity and interest. I like to explore new things: vacation spots, hobbies, games, restaurants and new ways to energize the relationship to keep it fresh and exciting. As a lover, I thrive on physical contact and tend to be bold, warm and charming. I will generously give extravagant gifts to please my mate. I'm also generous to friends.

As a child, I was frustrated by the public school routine. I learn best by experience rather than from lectures, reading or filling in workbooks. If there is physical involvement in the learning process, my natural competi-
tiveness and sense of fun will motivate me to learn.

I am less interested in striving for long-term goals, and more interested in living in the moment. I sometimes appear impulsive, but I have a great ability to be flexible and am not bothered by having to "change horses in midstream. "
