PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Dear friends,
One of the most popular sections of our Web site
is our "Libertarian
Celebrities & VIPs" page. On it, we list hundreds of famous or
well-known
people -- from a wide variety of fields -- who have proudly and publicly
called themselves "libertarian."
In this issue of the Liberator Online, we've
announced yet another addition
to that list.
Some people wonder why we do this. Indeed, some
folks scoff at the idea of
publicizing celebrities. They think we shouldn't need celebrities to advance
liberty.
I understand their point. In a perfect world,
perhaps, voters would read
Ludwig Von Mises' Human Action -- not People magazine.
But (as you may have noticed!) we don't live in a
perfect world.
Celebrities matter. Millions of Americans are
interested in them. That's why
People magazine sells 3.6 million copies every week.
That's why newspapers and broadcast media are
filled with the sayings and
doings of celebrities, whether in the worlds of entertainment, industry,
politics, intellectual pursuits, sports, or elsewhere.
In politics, too, celebrities matter. That's why
The West Wing's Martin
Sheen made headlines when he campaigned for Howard Dean. As did Madonna,
when she endorsed Westley Clark. And singer Carole King, when she appeared
at a rally for John Kerry.
No, celebrities are not a magic bullet. Just
because, say, Drew Carey or
Dave Barry or Clint Eastwood announce that they're libertarians doesn't mean
their fans will rush out to vote for libertarian candidates, or support the
Advocates. We understand that.
But... the spotlight that shines on libertarian
celebrities does reflect
light onto the *ideas* we share. That spotlight makes their fans a little
more willing to learn about -- and consider -- libertarianism.
And not just their fans. When Clint Eastwood is
quoted in USA TODAY saying
"I like the libertarian view, which is to leave everyone alone. Even as a
kid, I was annoyed by people who wanted to tell everyone how to live."
(January 5, 2004), *millions* of people take note. It instantly becomes more
"respectable" to be a libertarian -- even cool. It
"mainstreams" the word
and the ideas around it. Many people get curious to learn more.
We want to reach the public with the ideas of
liberty. Celebrities can help
us do this.
Businesses understand this -- that's why
basketball players sell soft drinks
and cars on TV. Liberals and conservatives understand this, too -- they use
celebrity endorsements all the time. They've made major progress by doing so
-- and by turning their own spokesmen and activists into celebrities and
household names (Rush Limbaugh, William F. Buckley, Michael Moore, etc.).
Libertarians need to do this, too.
That's why the Advocates created the
"Celebrities & VIPs" page. The
impressive list of names at that page gives credibility -- and maybe even a
bit of glamor -- to the libertarian philosophy.
UPDATING THE CELEBRITY PAGE
In the past, we've done a good job of listing
libertarian celebrities.
People tell us they love seeing the long list of famous names.
But we haven't provided enough
background/biographical material for all the
names there. What did these celebrities actually *say* about libertarianism?
What are their achievements?
We're improving that. Over the past month alone,
we've added more than 50
comprehensive profiles to our list of famous libertarian names. And more are
coming.
Now, when you click on a celebrity name, you get
a capsule summary of his or
her career, as well as specific quotations (with source citations) detailing
exactly what they said about libertarianism or the benefits of liberty. We
don't just claim these celebrities are libertarian. We let their own words
prove it.
Our goal by this spring is to make sure that
every prominent libertarian has
a profile attached. So, when their fans search for information and find our
page, they'll walk away saying: "So, Drew Carey -- or Gene Burns -- or John
Stossel -- or Sky Dayton -- really *is* a libertarian!"
And they'll have the chance to take the World's
Smallest Political Quiz
there, too -- to see if they share those same libertarian views.
A list of libertarian celebrities is intriguing.
A list of documented
libertarian celebrities is mind-changing. We're making it happen. And now
you know why.

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS,
UNBELIEVABLE NEWS
by James W. Harris
Former "Ironside" Star Is An Outspoken
Libertarian
Don Galloway's face is a familiar one to millions
of TV and movie viewers.
Some may remember him as tough-talking Detective Sergeant Ed Brown on the
hit TV show Ironside (1967-1975). Others may remember him as Buzz Stryker
from the soap opera General Hospital (1985-1987).
During his acting career Galloway appeared in
over two dozen movies and
countless TV shows, including Dallas, Murder She Wrote, MacGyver, Fantasy
Island, The Fall Guy, CHiPs, Charlie's Angels, and Wagon Train.
Today he's retired from acting and living in New
Hampshire, where he is a
consultant specializing in public speaking. He also teaches acting.
And he's a columnist for the Manchester, New
Hampshire Union Leader, that
state's largest paper. He's a libertarian -- and he doesn't pull any punches
when expressing his views.
Consider these samples from his Union Leader
column:
* On obscenity: "If the FCC wants to ferret
out obscenity, it should spend a
day in the United States Congress." (February 20, 2004)
* On the benefits of seceding: "The Republic
of New Hampshire [could
eliminate] the tyrannical, unnecessary taxes and regulations imposed upon it
by the dolts of Washington, DC." (March 12, 2004)
* On taxes: "We all remember the horrors of
slavery. The Internal Revenue
Service reminds us of it each April 15th, and sometimes more often."
(February 13, 2004)
And how about this excerpt from an interview on
an "Ironside" fan web site?
Q: Do you have strong political views? A: I'm a
Libertarian. Q: If you were
president of the United States, what would be your first action? A: "I
would
try to convince the U.S. Congress to repeal about ninety percent of the
idiotic legislation they've enacted."
Wow! Don Galloway for president, anyone?

Government Takes "First Steps" Towards
Military Draft
Last issue we reported on some ominous early
signs that a military draft
could be in the offing.
Almost all government and military officials
today continue to insist there
are no plans to reinstate a draft in the foreseeable future.
Critics, however, say "the foreseeable
future" might end just a few months
or so after the 2004 elections, when politicians can more easily propose
such a controversial move without it becoming a campaign issue. With U.S.
military forces in over 130 countries around the world, major military
commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq, and more recent expeditions to Haiti
and Africa, some argue that a military draft will inevitably be on the table
soon.
Meanwhile the Hearst News Service reported on
March 14 that steps toward a
"targeted draft" are being taken by the government right now.
Reports Hearst News:
"The government is taking the first steps
toward a targeted military draft
of Americans with special skills in computers and foreign languages.
"Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is
adamant that he will not ask Congress
to authorize a draft, and officials at the Selective Service System, the
independent federal agency that would organize any conscription, stress that
the possibility of a so-called "special-skills draft" is remote.
"Nonetheless, the agency has begun the
process of creating the procedures
and policies to conduct such a targeted draft in case military officials ask
Congress to authorize it and the lawmakers agree to such a request."
It seems just about everyone in Washington is
assuring us that we don't need
a draft and won't have one -- even as they take steps towards creating the
infrastructure to give us exactly that.

Outsourcing Critics Ignore the Real Job-Killers
"Outsourcing" has become a dirty word
in political discourse lately. Fear
and anger about American manufacturing and tech jobs moving overseas fills
newspapers and the airwaves.
Yet critics of outsourcing miss a crucial point,
says Radley Balko, a policy
analyst at the libertarian Cato Institute.
"[R]arely do pundits and commentators look
at the relationship between
companies moving plants overseas, and the kinds of tax and regulatory
policies employed by the states they're moving away from," says Balko, in a
recent Cato commentary.
"As it turns out, states with
business-friendly public policies attract and
retain jobs. States with policies hostile to business tend to lose them.
"According to the Economic Policy Institute,
for example, the five states
losing the most jobs between 1993 and 2000 were, in order, California, New
York, Michigan, Texas and Ohio. According to figures from the Bureau of
Labor Statistics, the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and
Massachusetts also rank near the bottom, particularly when you take jobs as
a percentage of population.
"Every year, CFO magazine asks financial
executives to assess the
business-friendliness tax policy of their respective states, which the
magazine then compiles and ranks. Ranking in the bottom 10? California, New
York, Michigan, Texas, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois and
Massachusetts -- the very states that seem to be bleeding jobs. The most
recent unemployment figures from the Labor Department put California, Texas,
Ohio, Illinois and Michigan all in the bottom 10, too, all with unemployment
rates at 7.0 percent or higher."
Balko cites other sources as well that back up
the thesis that the states
with the most hostile policies towards business are the same ones with high
unemployment and loss of jobs and companies.
And what about those states that are more
friendly to enterprise? Are they
attracting and keeping jobs?
"The evidence suggests they're doing
well," Belko says. "According to the
Bureau of Labor statistics, the only state that actually *gained* net
manufacturing jobs from 2000 to 2003 was Nevada. Nevada ranks 2nd on the
SBSC's business-friendly list. It ranks 3rd on the Tax Foundation list. It
ranks in the top four of CFO's list..."
Belko gives examples of other states in his
article, then concludes:
"On its face, this cursory look at the data
makes a lot of sense. For all
the talk of offshoring, the cost of packing up a domestic plant and moving
it overseas is significant. Even outsourcing tech support and programming
doesn't always make economic sense. American workers are still far more
productive than, for example, Indian workers -- even when you factor in the
lower wages. It's only when the onus of complying with federal, state and
local tax laws and regulations becomes overly burdensome that it makes
economic sense for a corporation to shop jurisdictions for a better deal.
"So the next time a local politician blasts
NAFTA or greedy corporatism for
the loss of local jobs, it might not hurt to take a look at just how
friendly that politician's state or city tax and regulatory and labor
policies are toward business. It's likely that same politician's policies
are a big reason those jobs left."

ASK DR. RUWART
How can you answer difficult questions about
libertarianism -- in short,
positive, persuasive soundbite-sized responses? It's a challenge every

libertarian communication, and author
of the international bestseller Healing Our World. In this column she gives

Should we outlaw alcohol and tobacco?
Question:
"I've argued to people that many illegal
drugs are less harmful than alcohol
and tobacco. But some people respond by saying this just shows that we ought
to ban alcohol and tobacco, too. What would you say to such a response?"
My short answer:
"We tried to ban alcohol in the 1920's and
it didn't work -- alcohol
Prohibition was a disaster. Outlawing something that people want doesn't
stop them from getting it.The only way to protect people from themselves is
to show them a better way.Every dollar we spend on the Drug War is a dollar
that enriches drug dealers instead of educating drug users.
"Overeating kills more people with
cardiovascular disease than alcohol,
drugs, or tobacco. Should we pass a law to monitor the caloric intake of
each person -- or should we spread the word about the dangers of weight
gain?"
* * *
Should smoking be outlawed in bars and
restaurants?
Question:
"What do libertarians think about laws that
outlaw smoking in bars and
restaurants? People have the right to smoke, and bar owners should be able
to set the rules for their establishment. But shouldn't customers have the
right to breathe clean air, too?"
My short answer:
"In a libertarian society, the smoking
policy would be set by the bar or
restaurant owner. Customers would patronize the establishments that had the
policy they preferred, much as they do today. For example, I avoid places
that are smoke-filled, and opt for restaurants that are smoke-free or have
separate accommodations for smokers and non-smokers.
"As a customer, I have no right to dictate
smoking policy any more than I
have a right to dictate the color schemes for clothing manufacturers.
However, I let both know my preferences by voting with my dollars to do
business with them or their competitors."

PERSUASION POWER POINT #159
Can You Take No For an Answer?
by Michael Cloud
"I don't want to talk about the Drug
War," said the moderate.
"Don't you care that over 1,000,000 peaceful
drug offenders are in prison?"
asked the libertarian. "Doesn't it bother you that civil liberties are
being
infringed? That innocent people are being searched and arrested?"
"I really don't want to argue about
it," said the moderate. "I'm not
interested in it."
"What do you mean you're not interested in
it?" challenged the libertarian.
"I'm going to tell you why it's important, how it affects you, and why you
should be concerned."
I've seen many similar encounters. I've been on
both sides of them. Have
you?
On Immigration. Gun Freedom. Abortion. Foreign
Policy. Drug Prohibition.
Minimum Wage. Public Schools. On almost every libertarian position or
proposal.
One person wants to talk about something. He
wants to discuss or debate an
issue.
The other person does not want to talk about it.
Nor listen.
Very often, the person seeking to talk or discuss
or debate the subject
plows ahead. He pushes. Pressures. Sometimes he tries to manipulate the
emotions of the uninterested person. Guilt. Fear. Anger. Envy. Pride.
It rarely works. Even when it does, it rarely
lasts.
Pressure causes resistance. Pushing creates
opposition. Manipulation often
prompts emotional disengagement.
"But they need to know about this. They
should be interested." says our
libertarian.
If they don't want it, you are wasting your time.
And creating opposition.
Can you take "No" for an answer?
Will you?
A "No" now may become "Yes"
at another time and place.
A "No" now may stay a "No."
Taking "No" for an answer shows the
other person you are listening. That you
respect his wants and needs. That you respect him.
Taking "No" for an answer frees you to
say "No" when he wants to talk about
something that bores you to tears.
Taking "No" for an answer frees you
both to find mutually interesting
subjects, mutually rewarding conversations.
Taking "No" for an answer frees you to
move on -- and talk about your issue
with those who are eager to discuss it.
With those who are interested and excited and
receptive.
Sometimes people say "No" in words.
Sometimes they say "No" with their body
language or tone of voice. Sometimes they try to change the subject.
Sometimes they try to end the conversation by leaving.
If you're unsure whether the person wants to
continue talking about the
subject, ask:
"You don't seem very interested in this.
Would you rather talk about
something else?"
"I'm feeling really distant and disconnected
in our conversation. This isn't
something you really want to talk about, is it?"
"Would you rather not discuss this?"
Or, my favorite:
"Can you help me with something. I'd like
you to rate what we're talking
about. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being indifference or disinterest and
10 being a burning desire to talk about this, where would you rank this
issue/subject?"
If it's a 6 or below, ask:
"Let's talk about something else. What would
you enjoy talking about? What
are you intensely interested in?"
When you can take "No" for an answer,
you will have more interesting and
engaging conversations.
And when your social circle finds out it's safe
to say "No" to unwanted
libertarian issues -- they might just surprise you by saying "Yes" to
libertarian proposals they do want.
When they're free to say "No," they're
free to say "Yes."

The Advocates for Self-Government is a non-profit
educational organization.
Our purpose is to: (1) present the freedom philosophy honestly and
persuasively to opinion-makers and the public so that they can encounter,
evaluate, and when ready, embrace the ideals of self-government; (2) help
libertarians become effective and powerful communicators of the ideas of
liberty; and (3) change the political map from the inaccurate and
exclusionary ‘left-right/liberal conservative’ line to a more accurate and
inclusive model (like that on our World's Smallest Political Quiz) that
includes libertarians and others.
PLEASE NOTE: Contributions to the Advocates are
tax-deductible under Section
501©(3) of the IRS code. If you would like to support the vital,
world-changing work of the Advocates, we to*welcome* your donation. To
