PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Dear friends,

The Advocates' World's Smallest Political Quiz has recently received a flurry of media attention -- from newspapers, magazines, and television.

I'd like to share just a bit of it with you:

"The World's Smallest Political Quiz [is] my favorite part of the site. It can really tell you something about yourself." -- Columnist Joe Zorbino, The Daily Mississippian (University of Mississippi), June 22, 2004

"[An] irresistible political quiz. Find out why it's so popular." -- Channel 7 Television (NBC), San Diego, California, July 8, 2004

"If politics has been a bit heavy for you lately, why not lighten up with the World's Smallest Political Quiz.... Although it's American, the questions, all ten of them, are universal. Within seconds, you will be scored and know what your political philosophy is. It is refreshingly simple and quick." -- Kate Harrison, The Westmorland Gazette (UK), May 21, 2004

"We should educate ourselves and not rely solely on traditional media outlets for our information. For example... if you want to see where you fall on the political spectrum, take the world's smallest political quiz." -- Jamie Smith, Delta Business Journal (Mississippi), July 2004

"Since 1995, according to The Liberator [Online]... 3 million U.S. citizens have taken the 'World's Smallest Political Quiz.' Are you a Libertarian? Perhaps you should take the test." -- Steven Sisson, Augusta Free Press (Waynesboro, Virginia), July 21, 2004

Last issue I mentioned we'd recently had our 3,000,000th online Quiz taker. Those numbers keep rising by thousands each and every day. We are making a difference! Thanks to Advocates supporters for making this incredible, world-changing success possible.

We're working on some major updates and changes to the Quiz Web site, to make it better than ever. We'll announce them here first. Stay tuned!

* * *

Once again the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) -- an organization devoted to spreading libertarian ideas within the Republican Party -- had a major success with Operation Politically Homeless (OPH).

OPH is the Advocates outreach tool that, by using the Quiz and other material, transforms an ordinary political booth into a crowd-drawing, fun event.

The Southern Republican Leadership Conference was held in Miami Beach, Florida, April 15-17. At this biennial conference Republican leaders and activists meet to share ideas and develop strategies regionally and nationally. The event attracts hundreds of top GOP leaders and officeholders -- highly influential leaders and opinion-shapers.

The RLC was there with OPH. Ninety conference attendees took the Quiz, with nearly a third scoring in the Libertarian sector.

Jeff Palmer, Coordinator of the RLC of North Carolina, notes that "Several new people scoring in the very high Libertarian quadrant were identified, and new RLC memberships have already begun rolling in."

Jeff thanks RLC members Tami and Dave Bell, Philip Blumel, Frank Cuzzocrea, Jr., Sean Landon, Ed Rahn, Alan Turin, Tom Walls and Paul Yavis, who worked alongside him at the booth.

The Florida RLC's home page describes the Quiz and OPH as "staple outreach tool[s] of the RLC."

Congratulations! Libertarians around the country are using OPH to open minds and spread the ideas of liberty. We invite you to share your OPH success stories with us.

PS: What would a libertarian society look like, feel like? Would it be a world of ruthless, dog-eat-dog competition, where only the fittest survive? Or... would it be something far different?

A few years ago I set out to explore that question in a speech. It proved extremely popular. Many people have told me it opened their minds to a side of libertarianism they'd never before considered -- the warm, compassionate side of liberty.

I've recorded an updated version of that speech on CD. It's reviewed in our Product Review department at the end of this issue. I hope you'll check it out. Thank you.

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS, UNBELIEVABLE NEWS

by James W. Harris

Conservatives Leaders Say: Legalize Pot

Three important articles this month indicate the growing support among conservatives -- yes, conservatives -- for reform of marijuana laws, even outright legalization.

National Review is the world's leading conservative magazine, and it has -- surprisingly to many -- supported ending the War on Drugs since 1996. The June 29, 2004 cover story is "An End to Marijuana Prohibition: The Drive To Legalize Picks Up." Written by Ethan Nadelmann of the Drug Policy Alliance, the article begins:

"Never before have so many Americans supported decriminalizing and even legalizing marijuana.

"Seventy-two percent say that for simple marijuana possession, people should not be incarcerated but fined: the generally accepted definition of "decriminalization." Even more Americans support making marijuana legal for medical purposes.

"Support for broader legalization ranges between 25 and 42 percent, depending on how one asks the question.

"Two of every five Americans -- according to a 2003 Zogby poll -- say "the government should treat marijuana more or less the same way it treats alcohol: It should regulate it, control it, tax it, and only make it illegal for children."

Nadelmann's article goes on to make a powerful case for legalizing marijuana, and is well worth reading.

A few days later, William F. Buckley, arguably America's leading conservative spokesman, cited Nadelmann's arguments in his syndicated column (July 5), and called for legalizing marijuana (as he has in the past). Wrote Buckley:

"Conservatives pride themselves on resisting change, which is as it should be. But intelligent deference to tradition and stability can evolve into intellectual sloth and moral fanaticism, as when conservatives simply decline to look up from dogma because the effort to raise their heads and reconsider is too great…

"[A]lthough there is a perfectly respectable case against using marijuana, the penalties imposed on those who reject that case, or who give way to weakness of resolution, are very difficult to defend. If all our laws were paradigmatic, imagine what we would do to anyone caught lighting a cigarette, or drinking a beer. Or -- exulting in life in the paradigm -- committing adultery. Send them all to Guantanamo?

"Legal practices should be informed by realities. These are enlightening in the matter of marijuana. There are approximately 700,000 marijuana-related arrests made every year. Most of these -- 87 percent -- involve nothing more than mere possession of small amounts of marijuana."

Buckley goes on to note there is a growing movement for legalizing medical marijuana. "What is required is a genuine republican groundswell. It is happening, but ever so gradually."

Finally, The Republican, a Massachusetts daily newspaper, called for legalization of marijuana for medical reasons, and for easing penalties for personal use. The Republican wrote: "At the very least, Congress should amend the law to allow for the medical use of marijuana. Some lawmakers might fear that voters will think they are soft on drugs if they approve such a change. Such thinking, to borrow a phrase from the cult movie on the dangers of marijuana, is reefer madness."

Libertarian Party's Badnarik: Second Choice for 43% of Americans

If the presidential election were held today, three percent of Americans would vote for Libertarian candidate Michael Badnarik.

Surprisingly, though, Libertarian Badnarik is the *second* choice of more than four in 10.

So says a new nationwide poll conducted last week by the respected Rasmussen polling firm, commissioned by the Badnarik campaign.

The poll of 1,000 adults found that Democratic John Kerry leads incumbent president George W. Bush by a slim margin of 46-43%.

However, when asked to choose between Badnarik or their first choice's main rival, a whopping 43% of voters chose Badnarik. (In other words, roughly 40% of Bush voters would vote for Badnarik rather than Kerry, and roughly 40% of Kerry voters would choose Badnarik over Bush.)

This is remarkable in many ways. It shows that the Libertarian Party -- and libertarian ideas -- have gained a significant amount of public understanding and support over the years.

Indeed, that is further reflected by the survey's finding that fully 10% of Americans explicitly identified their political ideology as libertarian rather than conservative or liberal. This would have been almost unthinkable just a few years ago.

Badnarik says he is not surprised by the results. "The American electorate is extremely polarized this year," he said. "And the Libertarian Party arguably constitutes the new center of the debate."

Badnarik also emphasized the same point the Advocates' World's Smallest Political Quiz makes about the difference between liberals and conservatives.

"The Democrats and Republicans stand at two extremes, characterized by which parts of our lives they emphasize their desire to control," he said. "Libertarians reject both extremes in favor of the government leaving control of your life to you."

If Badnarik received 3% of the vote in November, that would be more than three times the largest showing ever by a Libertarian Party presidential candidate.

It's also important to note that Badnarik's 3% is enough to make him the difference between a victory or a loss for Kerry and Bush in many razor-close "battleground" states -- and perhaps even the deciding factor in the presidential race itself.

Badnarik campaign manager Fred Collins says this poll indicates that the Republican and Democratic politicians will be forced "to fight us for the swing votes that we control."

Finally, Rasmussen also discovered that the vast majority of Americans want Badnarik in the presidential debates. 68% said he should be included; 12% were unsure; and only 20% said he should be excluded.

The Difference Between a Slave and a Free Man

A growing number of liberals and conservatives alike are talking about the desirability of some form of military conscription or compulsory national service.

Award-winning veteran liberal columnist Nicholas von Hoffman recently responded to this with a column that got right to the heart of the matter:

"National service is a form of slavery, though some may argue that it’s really not since the conscriptees get paid, get college money, medical insurance and perhaps other bennies. But it’s not a wage which distinguishes a free person from a slave; slaves have often been paid in the past. The difference between a slave and a free man is that a free man is free -- free to work at whatever wages he can get, free not to work. He’s free to go, free to come, free to talk, free to be silent and free to refuse to serve."

Ronald Reagan on the Draft...

"[The draft] rests on the assumption that your kids belong to the state. If we buy that assumption then it is for the state -- not for parents, the community, the religious institutions or teachers -- to decide who shall have what values and who shall do what work, when, where and how in our society. That assumption isn't a new one. The Nazis thought it was a great idea." -- Ronald Reagan, Human Events, 1979.

ASK DR. RUWART

Dr. Mary Ruwart is a leading expert in libertarian communication. In this column she gives readers "short answers to the tough questions" that libertarians are frequently asked.

Dr. Ruwart's past Liberator Online answers are archived in searchable form at: http://www.TheAdvocates.org/ruwart/categories_list.php

* * *

Question:

"Would a libertarian society have speed limits?"

My short answer:

"In a fully libertarian world, roads would be owned and operated privately, not by the government. Road owners would decide what speed limits (if any) would be set. Some might have no restrictions, like the European Autobahn.Others might have strict limits.Since safe travel is important to drivers, owners would most likely monitor and ban reckless drivers (slow or fast) from their roadways. The marketplace would thereby impose "regulation" of its own, with emphasis on *safety* rather than *speed*."

* * *

Question:

"Since roads today are *not* privately owned, should we call for laws against drunk driving?"

My short answer:

"My personal belief is that these laws do more harm than good.Instead, I’d prefer to see reckless or careless drivers pulled off the road, whether they are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, sleep loss, medication, or emotions that distract them from safe driving. The libertarian philosophy permits defensive measures when force is threatened (e.g., you can defend yourself against me if I point a gun at you but haven’t fired yet). Reckless driving could qualify as the threat of force."

PERSUASION POWER POINT #167

(Note: As we prepared this issue Michael Cloud was out of the country, speaking in New Zealand at the International Society of Individual Liberty's annual convention. We're repeating one of our favorite Cloud columns, below. Michael will be back next issue with a new column.)

The Power of Positive Passion

by Michael Cloud

What do you love about liberty? Not just like. Take-your-breath-away, heart-pounding, LOVE about liberty?

Which dishes on the libertarian menu make your mouth water... turn you on... light up your soul... jazz you... make you want to dance 'til you drop?

Which libertarian ideas or proposals turn you on? Stimulate you? Excite you? Make you want to howl at the moon?

Which elements of libertarianism make you feel intensely alive? What parts of liberty make you feel like the jazzmen: "Gonna live forever, don't believe in death"?

That passion is your gift. That passion is your strength.

Barbara Goushaw radiates that positive passion when she speaks about "Handguns are a Girl's Best Friend." Her passion turbocharges her stories and evidence and proofs. She wins the hearts and minds of many skeptics and undecideds...while inspiring freedom's friends.

Marshall Fritz pulsates with high octane energy when he speaks on behalf of Separating School and State. His positive excitement flows through audiences...and readies them for a dramatically different direction for learning and education in America. Because of his positive passion, Marshall Fritz's facts and ideas and options fall on fertile ground.

Richard Rider glows with enthusiasm when he protects San Diego taxpayers against unneeded bond issues, bloated tax hikes, and squanderous government spending. His exuberance and sense of humor, his love of liberty and respect for hard-working Americans magnify and multiply his effectiveness. And make his ideas easy on the ears.

Positive passion opens the door... for our libertarian ideas and proposals.

Positive passion wins more converts than irrefutable arguments and unassailable logic.

Positive passion attracts positive libertarians. The Best and the Brightest. The Wise and the Kindest.

Positive passion is remembered long after libertarian information is forgotten.

Positive passion brings people back for more. More passion. More ideas. More information about Liberty.

Positive passion is the fuel that drives libertarian principles and information into the receptive recesses of your listener's mind.

Where do you get this positive passion? How do you crank it out?

1. Search your heart for the handful of libertarian issues that boosts your energy, makes your skin tingle, stimulates your eagerness and anticipation. Those are you touchstone issues. Those are the ones that will engage your curiosity. The issues that you will insatiably study and reflect on and talk about.

2. Express your excitement when you speak with others about these issues. Express your excitement FOR our libertarian solutions and alternatives. Let people see and hear and feel how positively charged you are about our libertarian remedies and recommendations.

Many years ago, a French Impressionist painter appeared at an exhibit of his own paintings.A society matron said, "I've never seen a sunset like that." "But don't you wish you could?" he responded. His energy and passion and vision made his art irresistible. As will ours.

3. Stop driving with the brakes on. Stop holding back emotionally. Express your passions. Share you enthusiasms. Celebrate your loves and admirations.

* * *

A lot of us need a little help in recovering our emotional expressiveness.

May I suggest a few books that really helped me?

"How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success in Selling" by Frank Bettger. (The first chapter -- all 7 pages -- will show you how to ignite your excitement.)

"Enthusiasm Makes the Difference" by Norman Vincent Peale.

"Zen and the Art of Writing" by Ray Bradbury. (This will awaken your zest -- and liberate the passionate speaker and writer in you.)

Positive passion let Cobden and Bright free England of protectionist laws that were impoverishing working people.

Positive passion gave Patrick Henry the strength to stir the souls of American patriots -- and win our independence from Britain.

Positive passion gives you and me hope and belief that liberty is American's destiny.

Positive passion and liberty will triumph.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Sharon Harris's acclaimed speech now on CD!

"The Invisible Hand is a Gentle Hand," by Sharon Harris. CD, 39 minutes. Published by the Advocates for Self-Government, 2004.

What would it be like to live in a libertarian world?

Would it be a world of ruthless, dog-eat-dog competition? Survival of the fittest? Or… would it be something far different?

Sharon Harris, president of the Advocates for Self-Government, answers those questions and more in this compelling, acclaimed speech.

Sharon explores a too-often neglected aspect of liberty -- its compassionate and benevolent side. She firmly dispels the myth of "benevolent" government, and gently makes the case that only freedom can give people what they want: a tolerant, humane, and abundant society. Along the way, she also...

* Contrasts the invisible hand of freedom with the "visible fist" of government.

* Dispels the "dog-eat-dog" myth of ruthless free-market competition.

* Exposes the government's war against desperately ill Americans.

* Defends the right to keep and bear arms as a way to create a more peaceful and secure society.

* Explains why freedom fosters a more cooperative, compassionate, generous world.

* Shows why asset forfeiture is "robbery with a badge."

* Makes the case against a military draft and senseless foreign wars.

* Demonstrates how privatizing Social Security could make most Americans -- even the working poor -- wealthy in a generation.

* Explains why libertarians can't be "too consistent."

* And... reveals why history is on our side.

"The Invisible Hand Is a Gentle Hand" is a wide-ranging, persuasive look at the real-world benefits of liberty. It will show you why the cause of liberty is the best hope for mankind.

It will encourage you to envision a better world -- and inspire you to make that world happen. It's also a perfect speech to share with non-libertarian friends.

"The Invisible Hand Is a Gentle Hand" is published and distributed exclusively by the Advocates for Self-Government.
