President's

Corner

Dear friends,

Michael Cloud's column this issue discusses a subject that's very important to the liberty movement: the dangers of pessimism.

Nothing is worse for libertarians than to succumb to pessimism -- to conclude that the fight for liberty is hopeless, and thus not worth engaging in.

Too many libertarians fall prey to this fallacy. Don't be one of them.

I am extremely optimistic about the prospects for liberty, both short-term and long-term.

And mine is not a naïve, wishful-thinking kind of optimism. Rather, it's grounded on what I see as the great success and tremendous growth of the libertarian movement.

I have a longer perspective than some of you. I became a libertarian in the late 1960s. At that time, there was virtually no organized libertarian movement. No Libertarian Party. Just one libertarian-oriented think tank, the wonderful Foundation for Economic Education. Just a few small libertarian-oriented periodicals.

There were only a handful of important libertarian books. Almost no one in America even knew what libertarianism was -- or had even heard the word.

The notion that a person could be consistent on liberty -- support both personal and economic liberty -- seemed outlandish, weird, unbelievable to most people.

Yet, in a very short time, all that has been reversed. Now there are many major libertarian think tanks and political organizations -- including some of the most influential in America. There are hundreds of libertarian publications, hundreds of important libertarian books. Further, libertarian ideas are spreading rapidly around the entire globe. We are truly a worldwide movement -- and growing daily.

And we are having an effect. Journalists now understand the essence of libertarianism, as do millions of other people -- a major conceptual breakthrough. Libertarian policy proposals are now a major part of the U.S. political debate.

Millions of Americans, including some major celebrities and opinion shapers, are now libertarians. The word "libertarian" has actually become cool.

Of course, no one would deny that bad things are happening politically. We report on them in every issue of the Liberator Online.

But these may well be the last, desperate thrashings of dying authoritarian political ideas.

The ideas and the political movements of the left and right have been tried -- and they have failed. They are intellectually and morally bankrupt. I believe their era is over. People are looking for new answers -- new solutions. And libertarians have them. Indeed, the only people offering real, tested alternatives to the "statist quo" are -- libertarians.

The irresistible logic and the humanity of libertarian ideas are quickly moving people from both the left and the right in our direction.

And even when they don't fully agree with us, they are increasingly coming to realize that, on specific pro-freedom issues, we are their best, most consistent allies. The possibility of powerful new alliances for liberty is greater than at any time in history. And these alliances -- liberals and libertarians fighting to end the Drug War, conservatives and libertarians fighting to roll back taxes, libertarians and peace activists working to halt war -- can move us rapidly toward a freer America and a freer world.

People are hungry for the ideas of liberty. They want to hear what we have to say.

Our job is to stay optimistic, to stay excited, and to bring these ideas -- in the most effective and persuasive ways possible -- to the millions who are so hungry for them. So that, together, we can change the world.

Good News,

Bad News,

Unbelievable News

Atlas Shrugged movie: A Trilogy -- Starring Angelina Jolie?

xxxAtlas Shrugged

After decades of false starts and disappointments, plans are quickly coming together for a major Hollywood film version of Ayn Rand's seminal individualist novel Atlas Shrugged.

A deal has been signed. A major studio is producing it. Funding has been secured. A script has been drafted. Major stars are eagerly seeking the roles -- including Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie, who very much wants the lead role of Dagny Taggart.

Further: plans are for it to be shot as a trilogy!

Some background: The novel Atlas Shrugged played a major role in the formation of the modern libertarian movement (although Rand never called herself a libertarian and was critical of what she perceived as libertarianism).

Rand's complex, epic and controversial novel is, among other things, a thriller, a romance, and an uncompromising philosophical defense of personal and economic liberty and individualism.

The book has been a publishing phenomenon since its publication in 1957. It has never been out of print in hardback and has sold millions of copies worldwide.

A 1999 Modern Library reader survey ranked it as the number one book published in the 20th century. In 1991, the Library of Congress commissioned a nationwide survey seeking books that changed the lives of their readers. First was the Bible; second was Atlas Shrugged.

So what's the latest on this eagerly anticipated movie?

According to Robert Bidinotto, editor of the New Individualist magazine, published by The Objectivist Center:

* Lions Gate studio -- the largest and most successful independent film distributor-studio in North America -- will invest $40 million or more for the initial production effort.

* Because of the complexity and length of the story, plans are for the film to be shot and shown as a trilogy (like Lord of the Rings).

* Those involved with the film -- from executive producers on down -- are strongly committed to keeping Rand's philosophical vision intact and to making a truly landmark, extraordinary film.

* A draft for the first part of the trilogy has been finished. The writer is James V. Hart, whose major film credits include Contact, Hook, and Tuck Everlasting.

Hart, like others involved with the film, seems deeply committed to the project: "Ayn Rand created extraordinary events and powerful characters over fifty years ago in her visionary novel, that are suddenly coming frighteningly true all around us every single day. This is a big, important challenge as a screenwriter and a great privilege."
Angelina Jolie
* Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie is extremely interested in the lead role of Dagny Taggart, and she has told the executive producers that she very much wants to keep the character true to the novel and use as much of Rand's actual dialogue as possible.

* The producers say they've been contacted by many other major stars eager to be in the movie.

So when can we hope to see it? Says Bidinotto:

"The next step in the production is hiring the right director. [Executive producers] mentioned several candidates, but expect that search to be over by the fall. Once a director is announced ... production will accelerate at a very rapid pace. Expectations are that the rest of the casting and the filming would take place in 2007, the fiftieth anniversary of the novel. While they would love to release the film next year to coincide with the anniversary, they believe it is more likely it will be released in 2008."

Summarizes Bidinotto: "It looks like this grand tale will be made, at long last; and more important, it looks as if everyone connected with the production is dedicated to doing it right."

U.S. Drug War Plague: Paramilitary Police Raids

As many as 40,000 times per year, American homes are raided by paramilitary police forces dressed and armed as soldiers, according to a shocking new study by the libertarian Cato Institute.

That's an incredible 1,300 percent increase over the past 25 years. And the vast majority of these home invasions are to serve routine drug warrants, including for offenses as trivial as marijuana possession.

Furthermore, innocent bystanders are terrified, threatened, and sometimes even killed in these raids.

"These raids ... are needlessly subjecting nonviolent drug offenders, bystanders, and wrongly targeted civilians to the terror of having their homes invaded while they're sleeping," writes Cato policy analyst Radley Balko, "usually by teams of heavily armed paramilitary units dressed not as peace officers, but as soldiers."

Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America is the name of the study. The book-length document provides a legal, historical, and policy background of how this disaster evolved. Balko examines the dangers of "no-knock" and "short-notice" raids, explains how such confrontational tactics cause violence rather than lessening risks, and offers recommendations for reform.

OverkillOverkill includes an appendix of nearly 150 examples of documented botched raids, including: the case of Alberto Sepulveda, an 11-year-old boy shot in the head during a bungled raid in Modesto, California; Clayton Helriggle, a 23-year-old shot and killed when an inexperienced SWAT team raided a house of college-aged men guilty of recreational marijuana use; Sal Culosi, an optometrist in Fairfax, Virginia mistakenly killed by a SWAT team that had come to his home to arrest him for betting on sports games; and Mississippi police officer Ron Jones, shot and killed when Cory Maye, a man asleep at home with his daughter and who had no criminal record, mistook Jones' raid team for criminal intruders.

Furthermore, Balko has found more than three dozen examples of completely innocent people killed in mistaken raids; twenty cases of nonviolent offenders who've been killed; and more than a dozen cases of police officers killed by suspects or mistakenly targeted civilians who thought the police were criminal intruders.

These raids, writes Balko, "bring unnecessary violence and provocation to nonviolent drug offenders, many of whom were guilty only of misdemeanors; they terrorize innocents when police mistakenly target the wrong residence; and they have resulted in dozens of needless deaths and injuries, not only of drug offenders, but also of police officers, children, bystanders, and innocent suspects."

If you don't think this can happen to you, or your family, regardless of whether you're innocent or not, this study proves it can.

Cato has also released an interactive Google Maps application that plots nearly 300 examples of mistaken raids since the mid-1980s. Users can zoom in to street level, and sort raids by their end result (death of an innocent, death of a police officer, etc.), and the year of the raid.

The map is available at http://www.cato.org/raidmap.

Wall Street Journal: Open the Borders

Immigration is an issue that recently has divided libertarians like few others. While many libertarians favor open borders in theory, or at least want far less restraints on immigration, some argue that the position is either too radical to gain any support, or too dangerous and impractical in an age of terrorism, government welfare, and threats to American cultural values.

Regardless of your position on this controversial issue, a new article in the July 10, 2006 Wall Street Journal raises important points worth examining.

The article is entitled "Conservatives and Immigration: The debate on the right about freedom, culture and the welfare state."

First some background. It may surprise some to learn that, for more than 20 years, this mainstream, distinguished and highly influential newspaper has long taken an extremely bold position in favor of open immigration.

Indeed, on July 3, 1984 they called for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution: "There shall be open borders."

Wrote the WSJ in 1984: "If Washington still wants to 'do something' about immigration, we propose a five-word constitutional amendment: There shall be open borders. Perhaps this policy is overly ambitious in today's world, but the U.S. became the world's envy by trumpeting precisely this kind of heresy."

They have written in favor of open borders and eased immigration many, many more times since then.

In this latest article, they explain and defend their position.

"Our own view is that a philosophy of 'free markets and free people' includes flexible labor markets. At a fundamental level, this is a matter of freedom and human dignity. These migrants are freely contracting for their labor, which is a basic human right. Far from selling their labor 'cheap,' they are traveling to the U.S. to sell it more dearly and improve their lives. Like millions of Americans before them, they and certainly their children climb the economic ladder as their skills and education increase.

"We realize that critics are not inventing the manifold problems that can arise from illegal immigration: Trespassing, violent crime, overcrowded hospital emergency rooms, document counterfeiting, human smuggling, corpses in the Arizona desert, and a sense that the government has lost control of the border. But all of these result, ultimately, from too many immigrants chasing too few U.S. visas.

"Those migrating here to make a better life for themselves and their families would much prefer to come legally. Give them more legal ways to enter the country, and we are likely to reduce illegal immigration far more effectively than any physical barrier along the Rio Grande ever could.

"This is not about rewarding bad behavior. It's about bringing immigration policy in line with economic and human reality. And the reality is that the U.S. has a growing demand for workers, while Mexico has both a large supply of such workers and too few jobs at home."

But what about the welfare state? What about immigrants not paying taxes, and draining public services?

"[T]he immigrants who arrive here come to work, not sit on the dole. And thanks to welfare reform, the welfare rolls have declined despite a surge in illegal immigration in the past decade.

"The real claims that illegals make on public services are education, which can't be withheld because of a 1982 Supreme Court ruling (Plyer v. Doe), and health care, especially emergency rooms. Since denying urgent medical treatment is immoral, the answer again is to legalize cross-border labor flows and remove government obstacles to affordable health insurance. As for education, even illegals pay for public schools through the indirect property taxes they pay in rent.

"Overall, immigrants contribute far more to our economy than they extract in public benefits."

What about cultural concerns? Don't worry, the WSJ says. Immigrants are embracing American culture and embracing economic liberty.

"Mexican immigrants, like their European predecessors, are assimilating. Their children learn English and by the end of high school prefer it to their parents' native tongue. They also marry people they meet here. Second-generation Latinos earn less than white Americans but more than blacks and 50% more than first-generation Latinos."

There is much more of interest in the article, as well as in the original 1984 WSJ article on open borders. Both can be found at the links below.

QUICK SHOTS...

* Cato on education stagnation: "The last great innovation to transform classroom instruction occurred during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson: the invention of the chalkboard, around 1801. Since that time, the pace of innovation has been so slow that a student from the mid-1800's would immediately recognize a modern classroom setting. The most sought-after private schools enroll only about a thousand more students today than they did a century ago. This degree of stagnation is unheard of outside of the education sector, because it is only in the education sector...that market activity has been so thoroughly extinguished by government monopoly provision." (Source: The Cato Institute.)

* Congress polices itself: "Republican Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa is proposing a tax on pimps and prostitutes... He wants a tax on pimps and prostitutes, then jail them when they don't pay. It's good to see Congress finally policing itself." -- Jay Leno, The Tonight Show

Persuasion Power

Point #207

Warning: The "Darkness Cursers" May Be Hazardous to Your Life and Liberty

By Michael Cloud

"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here," reads the inscription at the Entrance to Hell. (The Divine Comedy by Dante.)

This warning should be posted at the top of many libertarian and free market Web sites and emails.

Why? Their writers are Darkness Cursers. Misery Merchants. Dealers of despair and depression.

"It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness," says the proverb.

But the Darkness Cursers disagree. They repeatedly and relentlessly curse the darkness. They celebrate and support darkness cursing. They act as if cursing the darkness brings us light.

"It's even worse than you might imagine," they tell us. Then they tell us -- in excruciating detail -- the damage and destruction that government is causing.

"This crisis leading us to the brink of:

a) the destruction of Western Civilization,
b) the economic collapse of America,
c) Fascism/Communism/Totalitarianism in America,
d) the end of any liberty in America,
e) all of the above,"

.. they suggest or say.

"Government is wrecking and ruining everything you love," they write.

The Darkness Cursers turn up the pain and suffering. They are Serial Demoralizers. Traffickers of Toxic Waste.

After they make you angry or frustrated or depressed, they deliver a final brain-numbing blow: they tell you there's nothing you can do about it.

Someone, somewhere might be able to do something about the darkness, but not you.

Maybe some group of people might be able to turn things around, but not you and your fellow libertarians.

"You are powerless. Helpless and hopeless," they imply or declare.

Warning: the Darkness Cursers May Be Hazardous to Your Life and Liberty.

The Darkness Cursers bring no light. The Darkness Cursers offer you no possibility.

Turn your back on them and their message of despair. Stop going to their Web sites. Stop reading their depressing essays and articles.

You want your trash picked up, not delivered.

Light a candle for liberty. Or find someone with a lighted candle -- and ask him to light yours. Light other people's candles.

And do not encourage or support Devil's Advocates to blow out candles.

Seek and find libertarian solutions to the darkness of Big Government. Seek and find candle lighters to share the light with others.

Urge and encourage the light bringers, keepers of the flame, and candle lighters.

Recommend they get flames and fuel from: http://www.theadvocates.org/.

Recommend they get bright and shining solutions for the darkness from: http://www.centerforsmallgovernment.com/.

Urge them to surround themselves with upbeat, positive, solution-oriented flickers, flames, and blazes. With the bright candles of liberty.

They will inspire you and ignite your enthusiasm. They will help you burn brightly for freedom.

Light your candle -- and bring the light to everyone in your life.

Ask

Dr. Ruwart

Dr. Mary Ruwart is a leading expert in libertarian communication. In this column she offers short answers to real questions about libertarianism. To submit questions to Dr. Ruwart, see end of column.

What do libertarians mean by separation of religion and state?

QUESTION: "You have endorsed a total separation of church and government. But there is no such thing as a true neutrality. Any position on an issue is essentially religious in some way -- i.e., the government must take a position on such major questions as where we came from, where we are going, morality, etc. So what would the libertarian government take a stance for?"

MY SHORT ANSWER: A libertarian government would outlaw aggression (first-strike force, fraud, or theft) against others, consistent with the teachings of most spiritual traditions. For example, Christians and Jews reject aggression as a violation of the Commandments against murder, theft, bearing false witness, and breaking of contracts, including the marriage contract. Buddhists reject aggression as a violation of the "loving kindness" that they believe should be extended to all. Since Hindus believe that what they do to others eventually is done to them (karma), they too usually reject aggression.

Humanists, who are largely atheists desiring universal harmony and abundance, would reject aggression if they realized that only freedom can bring about their goals. Most, however, have not yet "seen the light."

I would suggest that there is indeed "neutral" ground -- or, more accurately, common ground -- upon which almost all people, regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof, can eventually agree: we, as individuals and government, must abandon aggression if we wish to gain ground spiritually or materially.

Can I step on my neighbor's property to build a fence?

QUESTION: "Can I walk on a neighbor's property if it is necessary in order for me to build a fence?"

MY SHORT ANSWER: In a libertarian society you could, providing you had the neighbor's permission. In today's society, though, you'd have to check with an attorney, as the rules governing private property change at the whim of the courts and other governmental bodies!

Soundbites

for Liberty

The problem with politics: "The problem with politics isn't the money, it's the power. So long as politicians have the power to grant favors, exemptions, and business protection, people will find some way to subvert them -- if not with money now, then with promises to take care of them later. The only way we will clean up campaign financing is by taking power away from the politicians -- reducing the federal government to just the functions specified in the Constitution." -- Harry Browne (1933-2006), Liberty A to Z: 872 Libertarian Soundbites You Can Use Right Now

Biting the hand:
"The proverb warns that 'You should not bite the hand that feeds you.' But maybe you should if it prevents you from feeding yourself." -- Thomas Szasz

Hobgoblins: "The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." -- H.L. Mencken

"Harry Browne's new book will prove very useful to those interested in advancing the freedom philosophy. Harry provides libertarians with direct, thought-provoking, and often humorous responses to the questions advocates of the freedom philosophy face." -- from the foreword by U.S. Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX).

This book is, quite simply, one of the most useful books for libertarians ever written.

During his two campaigns as Libertarian Party candidate for President, Harry Browne quickly became famous as one of the finest -- and most quotable -- libertarian communicators ever.

It was no accident. In preparation for his campaigns, Harry crafted a personal file of over 1,000 "soundbites" -- short, powerful, thought-provoking, and highly quotable remarks -- on virtually every question libertarians are commonly asked.

He then committed them to memory -- and used them, again and again, to convince listeners to embrace libertarian ideas.

Now, in Liberty A-Z: 872 Libertarian Soundbites You Can Use Right Now, Harry shares his personal soundbite file with you!

This book contains the very best of those tested, proven soundbites. Ready for YOU to adapt to your own style and put to use for liberty.

Harry covers just about every political topic imaginable: Affirmative Action, Balanced Budget, Campaign Finance, Defense, Education, Federal Spending, Gun Control, Health Care, Immigration, Jobs, Libertarianism, Morality, National Interest, Oil, Pornography, Quotas, Republicans, Social Security, Terrorism, Utopian Thinking, Victimless Crimes, Welfare, Young People, Zero (a Flat Tax Rate of) -- and hundreds of other issues.

It's organized alphabetically by topic for quick and easy reference.

With Liberty A-Z, you can now put these soundbites to work for you -- in your conversations with friends, in letters to editors, in speeches, with the press, or on the campaign trail. In other words, anywhere you want to open minds. Or, you can use them as a brainstorming tool to create your own soundbites.

Put a master's best shots at your fingertips! Choose your favorites, adapt them to your own style, and you'll instantly add zip, zing and sparkle to your writing, speeches, and conversations about liberty.

Liberty A-Z will make you an instantly memorable and quotable speaker -- making this book one of the most useful libertarian communication tools ever written.
