President's
Corner
by

December
15:
Bill
of
Rights
Day!
A
little-known
but
very
important
U.S.
holiday
is
coming
up
--
one
far
too
many
Americans
are
unaware
of.
December
15
is
"Bill
of
Rights
Day"
-- a
day
to
celebrate,
honor
and
renew
support
for
our
precious
Bill
of
Rights.
It
was
on
December
15,
1791
that
the
Bill
of
Rights
--
the
first
ten
amendments
to
the
United
States
Constitution
--
went
into
effect.
One
hundred
and
fifty
years
later,
in
1941,
December
15
was
officially
proclaimed
Bill
of
Rights
Day.
Since
then
December
15
has
been
known
by
that
name.
States,
cities,
and
counties
across
America
have
passed
resolutions
honoring
Bill
of
Rights
day.
Some
classrooms
will
hold
special
Bill
of
rights
Day
classes,
and
some
citizens
and
organizations
will
celebrate
Bill
of
Rights
Day.
Still,
most
Americans
remain
sadly
unaware
of
the
date's
significance.
The
Bill
of
Rights
is,
of
course,
the
great
protector
of
American
liberties.
It
boldly
declares
that
people
have
certain
inalienable
rights
that
government
cannot
abridge
--
fundamental
rights
like
freedom
of
speech,
freedom
of
religion,
the
right
to
keep
and
bear
arms,
and
more.
It
also
provides
procedures
for
defending
those
rights
--
such
as
fair
trials
and
limits
on
federal
power.
The
Bill
of
Rights
doesn't
belong
just
to
America.
It
has
inspired
freedom
fighters
around
the
world.
The
Founders
viewed
their
Revolution
as
the
first
blow
in a
struggle
to
win
liberty
for
all
the
people
of
the
world.
So
the
Bill
of
Rights
is
truly
a
document
for
everyone.
Thomas
Jefferson
made
this
clear
in a
letter
to
James
Madison,
December
20,
1787:
"A
bill
of
rights
is
what
the
people
are
entitled
to
against
every
government
on
earth,
general
or
particular,
and
what
no
just
government
should
refuse,
or
rest
on
inference."
That's
why
I
hope
libertarians
will
use
Bill
of
Rights
Day
to
teach
their
families,
friends,
neighbors
and
others
about
our
precious
heritage.
It's
a
great
time
for
a
letter
to
the
editor
discussing
the
vital
importance
of
our
Bill
of
Rights
freedoms
--
and
urging
citizens
to
speak
out
against
current
calls
to
sacrifice
liberty
for
(alleged)
security.
With
our
fundamental
Bill
of
Rights
freedom
under
unprecedented
assault
in
recent
years,
this
has
never
been
more
important.
To
help
with
that,
here's
a
short
summary
of
the
Bill
of
Rights,
prepared
by
students
at
Liberty
Middle
School
in
Ashley,
Virginia.
(I've
added
just
a
few
words.)
While
this
condensed
version
doesn't
have
the
majesty,
depth
and
detail
of
the
entire
document,
it
is
short
and
easy
to
understand,
and
may
be
useful
to
you
in
discussions
and
letters:
THE
BILL
OF
RIGHTS
1.
Freedom
of
religion,
freedom
of
speech,
freedom
of
the
press,
right
to
assemble
peaceably,
right
to
petition
the
government
about
grievances.
2.
Right
to
keep
and
bear
arms.
3.
Citizens
do
not
have
to
quarter
soldiers
during
peacetime.
4.
No
unreasonable
searches
and
seizures.
5.
Rights
of
the
accused.
6.
Right
to a
fair
trial.
7.
Right
to a
trial
by
jury
in
civil
cases
also.
8.
No
cruel
and
unusual
punishments.
9.
Unenumerated
rights
go
to
the
people.
10.
Reserves
all
powers
not
given
to
the
national
government
to
the
states
or
the
people.
All
Americans
should
be
familiar
with
their
Bill
of
Rights
freedoms.
Sadly,
numerous
surveys
indicate
most
are
not.
Indeed,
a
1991
poll
commissioned
by
the
American
Bar
Association
found
that
only
33
percent
of
Americans
even
knew
what
the
Bill
of
Rights
was.
In
one
Gallup
poll
70
percent
did
not
know
what
the
First
Amendment
was
or
what
it
dealt
with.
Those
of
us
who
love
liberty
should
do
our
best
to
correct
that.
Bill
of
Rights
Day
is a
great
time
to
do
so.
Happy
Bill
of
Rights
Day!

Good
News,
Bad
News,
Unbelievable
News
by James W. HarrisHow The Gov't Gobbled Up Almost Half of Your Thanksgiving
Maybe you didn't notice, but an uninvited guest crashed your Thanksgiving dinner party.
His name was Uncle Sam. And he was responsible for a BIG portion of what you paid for your Thanksgiving feast -- a whopping 40.91 percent, according to Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), a non-partisan organization that works for lower taxes and smaller government.
ATR calculated that the average cost for a Thanksgiving feast for ten in 2009 was $42.91. That pays for a classic Thanksgiving spread: turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and coffee and milk.
Add five bottles of wine at a modest average price of $7.35, and that brings the total to $79.67 -- again, for a family of ten.
Incredibly, over half of that $76.97 goes to... the government.
Reports ATR:
"On top of the direct excise taxes on the wine, there are taxes paid by the farmers, winemakers, manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and shippers, retailers, warehouses.
"To be more specific, out of what the consumer pays, the producers and sellers must pay federal income taxes, state income taxes, federal payroll taxes, unemployment insurance taxes, workmen's compensation taxes, state franchise taxes, local property taxes and any local income taxes.
"All told, for a Thanksgiving feast for a family of ten, the government takes a bite of 40.91 percent, or $32.59."
Ouch! But it gets even worse.
Many people drive or fly to get to their Thanksgiving dinner. Some stay at hotels while visiting family. So... add taxes and other government-imposed fees on airfare, gasoline, and hotels to the cost of your Thanksgiving.
President Obama made a big show of sparing the White House turkey this Thanksgiving, as past presidents have done.
But we taxpayers and consumers once again were plucked, skinned, and carved up.
And of course, this goes on every day... not just Thanksgiving.
Is the U.S. Really "the Most Open Market in the World"?
While visiting China recently, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk declared that the United States is "the most open market in the world."
Sadly, that's total nonsense.
The Cato Institute's Daniel Griswold points out that fully 27 countries have more open markets than the U.S. Which means the people in those nations enjoy greater freedom to trade internationally than Americans do.
Griswold bases this startling claim on the highly regarded annual Economic Freedom of the World Report.
The Economic Freedom of the World Report weighs tariffs, regulatory barriers, exchange rate and capital controls, and actual levels of trade to calculate which economies are truly the most open.
According to the 2009 Report, the ten most open economies are, in order:
1. Hong Kong
2. Singapore
3. Chile
4. Ireland
5. Panama
6. Netherlands
7. United Arab Emirates
8. Slovak Republic
9. Hungary
10. Luxembourg
Far, far down the list is the U.S. -- in 28th place among 140 ranked nations.
As Griswald writes in his new book Mad About Trade:
"Despite the claims of openness, our government imposes significant barriers against imported clothing, footwear, leather products, glassware, watches, clocks, table and kitchenware, costume jewelry, pens, mechanical pencils, musical instruments, cutlery, hand tools, ball and roller bearings, ceramic wall and floor tile, railway cars, processed fruits and vegetables, rice, cotton, sugar, milk, cheese, butter and canned tuna." And that's just for starters.
This blatant protectionism immensely benefits some powerful U.S. business interests -- at a terrible cost to middle- and low-income Main Street American workers and their families, who would benefit enormously from the increased jobs and lower prices that global competition brings.
How outrageous, and sad, that the U.S., so long an example of free trade to the rest of the world, is falling increasingly behind in this crucial area.
The "Public Option" in Mail Delivery
As we move closer to the nightmare of a government takeover of our health care system, keep in mind this excellent point made by Paul Jacob, libertarian commentator and President of the Citizens In Charge Foundation:
"Weeks ago, in the debate over whether to euthanize what's left of freedom in American medicine, President Obama made a stunning concession about the so-called 'public option' being proposed.
"Hoping to assure attendees of a townhall meeting that private insurers would not be threatened by the public option, he said, 'if you think about it, UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? ... It's the post office that's always having problems.'
"Yes. The post office. The 'public option' in mail delivery: chronically in financial trouble; chronically over budget; chronically being bailed out by taxpayers.
"So, don't worry, everybody! Government expansion into our medical delivery system will be just as lumbering and inefficient as the post office is in our mail and package delivery system.
"Er, good point, Mr. President."
Re-Legalizing Marijuana Rapidly Winning Support Across U.S.
The re-legalization of marijuana may be an idea whose time has come.
"Support for legalizing marijuana grows rapidly around U.S." was the headline of an article in the November 23, 2009 Washington Post, one of America's most influential newspapers.
The article reports on numerous signs indicating that re-legalization may soon be on the national agenda. (Marijuana was outlawed by the federal government in 1937, shortly after the repeal of the disastrous alcohol Prohibition experiment.)
Among the points discussed:
* A startling October Gallup poll found fully 44 percent of Americans now favor full legalization of marijuana -- up 13 points since 2000.
* Gallup noted that if support continues to grow at just 1 to 2 percent per year, "the majority of Americans could favor legalization of the drug in as little as four years."
* Gallup also found that large areas of America already have majority support for re-legalization. Fully 53 percent of Americans in the West already favor legalizing marijuana.
* A planned 2010 initiative will give California voters a chance to vote for relegalization.
* California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared that the issue deserves serious debate -- and the California Board of Equalization, which collects taxes, estimates a tax on pot could raise $1.3 billion for the cash-strapped state.
* In early November the American Medical Association, America's largest and most prestigious physicians organization, dramatically altered its longtime position on marijuana. The AMA is now urging the federal government to change its classification of marijuana as a dangerous drug with no accepted medical use. The AMA wants this in order to clear the way to conduct clinical research and develop cannabis-based medicines.
Last year, the American College of Physicians, America's second-largest physicians organization, called for "rigorous scientific evaluation of the potential therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana."

Quick Shots...
JAY LENO ON THE JOB SCAM: "The White House and the Senate Democrats are working on a new jobs bill. The White House said this new jobs bill could create twice as many non-existent fake jobs as the last one." -- Jay Leno, Nov. 23, 2009.

JOHN STOSSEL ON THE RULING ELITE: "[Bill] O'Reilly told me that America is ready for a tax revolt. I hope he's right. But I don't think it will happen until more people see the ruling elite for what it is: a gang of arrogant bullies that has the audacity to believe that they know how to direct our lives better than we do."
-- libertarian journalist John Stossel, Nov. 18 2009.
THOSE VIOLENT MEXICAN BEER CARTELS: "Seriously, there is a reason you don't have Mexican beer cartels planting fields of hops in the California forests."
-- Bruce Merkin, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project, quoted in the Washington Post, November 23, 2009.
JAY LENO IS P.O.'D: "And the Postal Service announced last week the Post Office lost $3.8 billion last year. I've got a good idea. Let's put the government in charge of healthcare! Fantastic idea!" -- Jay Leno, Nov. 18, 2009.

PERSUASION
POWER
POINT # 279
What's the TRUE Want Behind What People SAY They Want
by Michael Cloud
"I want a single-payer health care system," wrote one blogger.
"I want universal health care," wrote another.
"I want a health care system that works for everyone," wrote a third.
After hearing these statements, most people either agree or disagree. They praise or criticize. Then they explain why or why not. With assertions, objections, evidence, and arguments.
But before we jump in, why not ask what's behind that want?
Ask what their want will DO or CAUSE or MAKE POSSIBLE. What results it will produce.
For example, "Could you help me understand what you're proposing? What will your single-payer health care system do that other health care systems don't do?"
Or, "Could you help me understand what you're proposing? What results will a universal health care system give us that no other health care system will?"
Or: "Could you help me understand what you're proposing? Based on what you've read or experienced, what kind of health care system would work for everyone? What would it do for us that no other approach will?"
It's not enough to know what their proposal is. It's not enough to learn the differences between their proposal and what you advocate.
We need to uncover what they believe their proposal will do or cause that no other proposal will. To discover the outcomes or results that their proposal alone will produce. How are their results different from the results of all other proposals?
Most of the time, you will find that they do NOT want the proposal. They want the unique results they believe it will produce.
They do NOT want the plan or system or mechanism or proposal. They DO want the outcome or results they believe that only their plan can deliver.
Once you've identified the true want behind their proposal, check out free-market or libertarian websites to learn private enterprise proposals or
remedies that will satisfy most or all of their true want. If the websites do NOT have the information you need, email them a request for guidance. Most of them will gladly help.
Then share the free market plan(s) with the person you were talking with. When you talk about what really matters to them, what they truly want -- you
will open their hearts and minds to liberty.

Dr.

Is
belief
in
religion
or
God
necessary
to
be a
libertarian?
QUESTION:
I
saw
a
reference
in
one
of
Michael
Cloud's
Liberator
Online
"Persuasion
Power
Point"
columns
to
"natural
or
God-given"
rights.
The
column
also
mentioned
Christianity
and
the
Bible.
As
an
atheist,
I
was
surprised
at
this.
Is
belief
in
God
a
necessary
part
of
libertarianism?
MY
SHORT
ANSWER:
Libertarianism
is
for
everyone
--
even
people
with
widely
diverging
beliefs
on
religious
matters,
like
atheists
and
Christians.
Libertarianism
takes
no
stand
on
religion.
The
libertarian
philosophy
is
held
by
people
of
all
manner
of
religious
and
non-religious
beliefs:
Christians,
Jews,
Muslims,
atheists,
agnostics,
pagans,
and
on
and
on.
The
common
denominator
that
brings
people
from
all
these
diverse
belief
systems
to
libertarianism
is
simply
a
desire
for
peace
and
plenty
(as
opposed
to
war
and
poverty)
--
and
the
shared
belief
that
the
way
to
achieve
this
is
to
build
a
society
based
on
the
"non-aggression
principle"
or
the
Good
Neighbor
Policy.
(The
non-aggression
principle
is
the
core
concept
of
libertarianism:
the
idea
that
people
should
be
free
to
live
their
lives
in
any
peaceful
way
they
choose,
as
long
as
they
don't
harm
others
or
their
property;
and
that
it
is
therefore
wrong
for
anyone,
including
the
government,
to
initiate
force
or
commit
aggression
against
the
person
or
property
of
peaceful
people.)
You
can
come
to
believe
in
the
non-aggression
principle
from
many
approaches.
Your
intellect
will
take
you
there.
The
Ten
Commandments
can
take
you
there,
too.
The
pathways
are
many,
but
they
all
lead
to
the
same
destination.
Isn't
it
remarkable
that
groups
with
such
divergent
beliefs
can
agree
on
liberty?

obdurate

There's
something
here
to

perhaps
outrage,
just
about
everyone

typical

One-Minute
Liberty Tip
WHEN, Not IF
by Sharon Harris
Scott Morgan, writing for StopTheDrugWar.org, makes an excellent point in a recent blog post:
"A wise colleague ... recently suggested to me that we should stop introducing our arguments with phrases like 'if marijuana were legal...' and instead say, 'when marijuana is legal...' and he's exactly right."
This is an excellent idea -- and not just for arguing for marijuana relegalization.
Saying "when" instead of "if" gives your arguments a sense of reality, even inevitability. It verbally moves your argument from a mere theoretical discussion to a talk about a living, breathing, real-world political issue -- and possibly even an impending victory.
It sounds confident, strong, positive.
It adds solidity and concreteness to arguments that might sound too theoretical or abstract to some listeners.
And it adds a dash of excitement.
That's a big gain from such a simple word change!
Compare:
"If we didn't have an income tax..." versus "When the income tax is ended..."
"If we could get the government out of education..." versus "When we end government involvement in education..."
"If we didn't have a Federal Reserve System..." versus "When America is finally freed of the Federal Reserve System..."
This simple change frames your argument in a more positive way.
Like any communication technique, don't overuse this. Use it subtly and occasionally, as a kind of seasoning for your speech or writing. A little sprinkle will definitely enhance the flavor of your argument.
