THANK YOU!

Last week, I sent a special email to Liberator Online subscribers, asking for donations to support the Advocates during these very difficult economic times.

Many of you responded with contributions, which we GREATLY appreciate. Thank you so very much. I know these are difficult times for many, and that makes us appreciate your donation all the more.

If you didn't see my message, Declaration of Independenceplease check it out, because it includes a link to a really neat site where you can actually sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence -- made from a copper plate engraving produced in 1823 from a direct  impression of the original! -- and print out a FREE beautiful copy suitable for framing.

The Advocates is still in great need of additional funding and new donors. If you like the crucial work of the Advocates and want to see it continue and grow, this would be a wonderful time for your donation, large or small.

As I mention in the letter, we have some great thank-you gifts for your tax-deductible donation to help with the vital work of the Advocates.

Again, thank you!

Discovering Their "Inner Libertarian"

More and more people are beginning to discover their "inner libertarian."

Mary Tyler MooreLast month television star Mary Tyler Moore told Parade magazine that she liked to watch FOX news. When Parade asked if she was a right-winger, Moore replied, "Maybe more of a libertarian centrist."

Similarly, in this issue we profile Glenn Beck, the phenomenally popular TV and radio personality. Once a mainstream conservative, Beck now calls himself a libertarian or "a libertarian in conversion."

Now, I'm not sure what a "libertarian centrist" is, and I've heard plenty of heated discussions as to whether or not Glenn Beck is fully a libertarian.

But the point here is that more and Glenn Beckmore people -- including some very prominent and powerful figures -- are becoming familiar with libertarianism, and are using the word "libertarian" in a positive way. Many are proudly using that word to describe their political leanings.

And that's a great thing for our movement.

Last issue, in my "Liberty Minute" column, I discussed leftwing linguist George Lakoff's notion of "bi-conceptualism." That's the idea that many people are neither right, left, or libertarian. Rather, on some issues, they are left; on some, they are right; on others, they are libertarian. If they embrace many, but not all, libertarian ideas, they are, by Lakoff's analysis, "partial libertarians."

We are witnessing a new growth in understanding and appreciation of libertarian ideas, and a fast-growing new generation of libertarians and "partial libertarians."

We can help advance this in the following ways:

1. Enthusiastically embrace people when they say they agree with libertarian ideas. Show your friendliness. Share their excitement! Welcome these "partial libertarians." You may not be meeting Glenn Beck or Mary Tyler Moore in the next week or two. But when your neighbor or coworker says he's "sort of" a libertarian, greet this with enthusiasm -- don't immediately search out the errors in his understanding, or criticize him for not having read all of Ludwig von Mises' works.

2. Listen to these newcomers. Let them tell you what *they* think, what excites them. Agree enthusiastically on the concerns you share. Don't rush to correct their errors or load them down with books. That can wait. Agree to disagree on issues where they're not yet on board.

3. Use the world libertarian yourself! The more publicity for this distinctive word, the faster our movement will grow. Use it in letters to newspapers, conversations, wherever you can. Bumperstickers, T-shirts. For years we have worked to generate multiple exposures for this word.

The work of liberty activists is now paying off, as the word libertarian -- and the movement for liberty it represents -- is rapidly moving into the mainstream. Keep it up!

A Chicken In Every... Pothole?

potholeAmerica's government-run roads are plagued with an estimated 350 million potholes -- one bone-jarring axle-cracking crater for every man, woman and child in America.

Leave it to the creative private sector to come to the rescue. The fast-food chain KFC has written America's mayors, offering to patch all the potholes in five cities -- for free.

All KFC wants in return is to stencil the KFCfinished repair with a chalk patch telling the public the road was "Re-Freshed by KFC."

The chalk patch isn't permanent: it will wash away after a rain or two.

"In honor of our 'Fresh Tastes Best' campaign, we want to come and Re-'Fresh' your roads!" wrote KFC president Roger Eaton to America's mayors. "Every patched pothole comes with the Colonel's very own stamp of approval."

KFC plans to start with its budget-strapped hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, where the mayor has welcomed the offer.

Even more surprising, KFC's offer has already generated competing private-sector offers. Chicago said it is considering KFC's offer, but added the city is studying a similar offer by another company or companies. And the animal rights group PETA has offered to beat KFC's offer in Louisville, if the city will use their anti-KFC ads instead.

Any way you look at it, this unexpected market innovation is good news for taxpayers -- and car owners.

Obama Endorses Bush's E-Spying on U.S. Citizens

"[T]he Obama Department of Justice has now invented a brand new claim of government immunity, one which literally asserts that the U.S. government is free to intercept all of your communications (calls, emails and the like) and -- even if what they're doing is blatantly illegal and they know it's illegal -- you are barred from suing them unless they 'willfully disclose' to the public what they have learned," reports civil liberties journalist Glenn Greenwald.

The Obama administration formally government spyingadopted this startling stance on April 3, while filing a motion to dismiss Jewel v. NSA. Jewel v. NSA is a case filed by the pro-civil liberties Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) that challenges the National Security Agency's huge, secret, and unconstitutional surveillance program.

That NSA surveillance program subjected millions of ordinary Americans to a massive electronic dragnet.

The Obama administration has stunned civil libertarians by coming out strongly in defense of the Bush administration's position that the courts cannot judge the legality of the warrantless wiretapping program.

Indeed, the Obama administration has gone further than Bush and actually strengthened the defense of this mass warrantless spying, claiming that "the Patriot Act bars any lawsuits of any kind for illegal government surveillance unless there is 'willful disclosure' of the illegally intercepted communications."

Glenn Greenwald sums it up:

"What's being asserted here by the Obama DOJ is the virtually absolute power of presidential secrecy, the right to break the law with no consequences, and immunity from surveillance lawsuits so sweeping that one can hardly believe that it's being claimed with a straight face.

"It is simply inexcusable for those who spent the last several years screaming when the Bush administration did exactly this to remain silent now or, worse, to search for excuses to justify this behavior."

Change we can believe in? Hardly. It's more like "meet the new boss -- same as (or even worse than) the old boss."

Glenn Beck: "I'm More and More Libertarian"

Glenn Beck"Every day that goes by, I'm more and more libertarian."

That's what top-rated radio and television talk show host Glenn Beck told the Miami Herald in January, as he moved his popular TV show from CNN to FOX.

"I've always been a conservative," Beck said. "But every day I find myself believing more and more in states' rights, individual rights -- let people alone, get the government out of everybody's lives, let everybody rule themselves."

Last month, "Glenn Beck" on FOX was the third most-watched program in all cable news, drawing well over two million viewers nightly. The New York Times called the show's explosive growth "a phenomenon." Beck's syndicated radio show is heard on more than 300 stations and is the third highest-rated national radio talk show among adults ages 25 to 54. Beck is also the author of three New York Times bestsellers.

All this makes Beck one of the most powerful media figures at this moment in America.

In the past, Beck -- known for years as a hardcore conservative -- sometimes ridiculed libertarians. But that has changed dramatically as he has increasingly accepted libertarian ideas himself.

On his radio show on March 18, 2009, Beck described himself as "a libertarian in conversion," adding, "and I think this is exactly where America is."

On March 6 the Los Angeles Times reported that "Beck stresses that he's a libertarian, not a Republican partisan, and prides himself on skewering politicians of every stripe."

Beck has given enormous free publicity to libertarian ideas recently by having a bevy of prominent libertarian figures as guests, including Ron Paul, Bob Barr, Stephen Moore, John Stossel, Sheldon Richman, Penn Jillette, Rob Kampia and Mark Skousen. Skousen says Beck told him he (Beck) was a libertarian. Skousen wrote that Beck "believes in maximum liberty and strict limits on the government's powers as enumerated in the U. S. Constitution."

On foreign policy Beck is now showing a surprising willingness to criticize the current U.S. interventionist foreign policy in Ron Paul-like terms ("empire"), and to argue the merits of a non-interventionist policy.

"I've always been for a strong military. I've always been for protecting our interests abroad," he told the Miami Herald. "But we have moved into a whole new zone that doesn't make sense. We can't coddle dictators in Egypt and Saudi Arabia and say, 'Hey, do our dirty work for us,' and then expect to be respected around the world. It won't work.

"I think we've got to say to the world, `If you come after us like they did on 9/11, we will pound you into rubble. Otherwise, we're minding our own business.'

"The Founding Fathers wanted us to be [like] Switzerland, a friend to all and an enemy to none, and let everybody do their own thing. I'm becoming more like that in my thinking."

On taxes, government spending, economics, gun rights and other issues where conservatives and libertarians often agree, Beck regularly touts a libertarian-friendly line.

Beck, who struggled to overcome alcohol and drug abuse in the mid-1980s, told the Miami Herald he had reservations about immediately legalizing drugs, doubting that society right now could handle some of the problems legalization might bring. But he also seems to agree with the principle of relegalization, telling the Miami Herald:  "But when everybody is willing to self-regulate and take responsibility for their own actions, count me in."

Beck's strongest criticism of libertarians currently seems to be his belief that libertarians call for too much change too fast. He argues this is unrealistic and unworkable and makes libertarians sound nutty. "It took a hundred years to build this American empire, and it will take some time to shrink it down," he told the Miami Herald.

Recently Beck has described himself variously as a conservative with strong libertarian leanings, a "libertarian in conversion," and simply a libertarian. He's certainly moved a long way towards libertarianism, in a short time, in a very public spotlight. Let's hope this highly influential media figure continues his journey to liberty.

Only 53% Favor Capitalism Over Socialism in USA

Only 53% of Americans think capitalism is better than socialism, according to a new Rasmussen poll.

Fully 20% think socialism is better, and 27% aren't sure which is better.

Worse, adults under 30 are almost evenly capitalistdivided: 37% prefer capitalism, 33% socialism, and 30% are undecided.

49% of adults in their thirties favor capitalism, versus 26% for socialism. Adults over 40 strongly favor capitalism; only 13% of older Americans favor socialism.

The survey did not define either "socialism" or "capitalism."

Why the startling show of support for the discredited doctrine of socialism?

Here are some guesses.

* Leftist writer Hendrik Hertzberg of the New Yorker says that "all the conservative shouting about how Obama is a socialist has had the unexpected effect of educating a sizable portion of the public to think of socialism as synonymous with 'European socialism' (i.e., democracy plus private industry plus nice, soft, 400-thread safety nets) instead of Soviet-style 'socialism' (i.e., totalitarianism plus gigantism plus poverty)." So perhaps a significant number of Americans are coming to view European-style socialism -- similar to U.S. "progressivism" -- favorably.

* Government ("public") schools, themselves thoroughly socialist institutions, have failed to educate young Americans about the failures and dangers of socialism. Or, for that matter, failed to educate millions of them on just about anything. Many poll respondents probably couldn't coherently define either socialism or capitalism if asked.

* Many people greatly prefer the term  "free market," which they associate with abundance and freedom, to "capitalism," which they associate with monopolies and corporate fat cats gaming the economy for their own benefit. This would explain a December 29, 2008 Rasmussen poll, which found that 70% of U.S. voters said a free market is better than one managed by the government. (It should be noted that many of those 70% also wanted government regulation of big business). This is why the Advocates has long suggested that libertarians use "free market" instead of "capitalism" when appropriate.

* The Bush administration has given the word "capitalism" a bad name. The Bush administration pursued gigantic social spending and an unprecedented assault on our fundamental constitutional liberties, all the while calling the system they favored "capitalism." Millions of Americans, understandably outraged by these policies, want nothing to do with anything the Bush administration favored.

Capitalists (or, better, free-marketeers) of the world, unite! We've got a lot of educational work ahead of us.

Quick Shots...

Newt GingrichGINGRICH SAYS BUSH STARTED IT: "Remember, everything Obama's doing, Bush started last year. If you're going to talk about big spending, the mistakes of the Bush administration last year are fully as bad as the mistakes of Obama's first two, three months. ... If the Republicans can't break out of being the right wing party of big government, then I think you would see a third party movement in 2012. ... [The current system] is so sick, so out of touch and so arrogant that you're going to have a nationwide rebellion at the polls of people in both parties who are just fed up."
-- former Republican Congressman Newt Gingrich speaking at the College of the Ozarks in Missouri, March 31, 2009.

YOU FIRST: "President Obama is giving General Motors 60 days to come up with a strategy of viability for the American taxpayers' money. You know what G.M. should have said? 'Hey, you first.'" -- Jay Leno, The Tonight Show, March 31, 2009.

POWER

#266: How to Bash, Slash, and Trash Your Political Enemies

by Michael Cloud

You don't have to change people's minds. You don't have to persuade them of the virtues and value of liberty. You don't have to make the case FOR libertarian theory or practice.

You can do what most political pundits fightingand spokespeople are doing. On cable TV, talk radio, the Internet.

You can bash, slash, and trash your political enemies.

You can become a political character assassin. A freelance mudslinger. You can throw verbal Molotov cocktails.

You can hate and berate your opponents. You can attack, attack, attack them.

You can ambush them at Web sites. In three minutes you can type a rude, sarcastic, snarky cheap shot.

You can sneak attack them on talk radio. Engage in ad hominems. Lob in logical non-sequiturs. Just three minutes of tarring their character or past can keep fellow haters chattering all day.

Use guilt by association. You know about six degrees of separation. With just a little googling, you can connect them to serial killers, terrorists, traitors, or any other evildoer.

Accuse, accuse, accuse. You don't need convincing evidence. The flimsiest connections will stick like Velcro. Smear, smear, smear.

You can irritate, antagonize, or provoke them or their supporters into defending themselves against your charges. You can get them off their message. You can waste their time and wear them down.

You can sow the seeds of venom and bitterness. Of hate and hostility.

From time to time, you can attack their positions and performance, to lure listeners into believing that where there's smoke, there's fire.

If you work at it, you can brainwash yourself into believing that you're advancing the cause of liberty.

If you work at it, you can congratulate and praise yourself for "fighting the good fight" for liberty.

But before you ease into a complacent confidence, you need to look at the costs and consequences of this path.

When others bash, slash, and trash your political beliefs, do you let down your guard and listen?

When others engage in this approach, are you more receptive to them and their beliefs -- or less?

When you attack, accuse, and smear others, what are your results? Do your attackees thank you for mocking and ridiculing them? Do they embrace liberty -- and join you? Or do they close their hearts and minds to libertarianism -- because of you?

We become what we do. Do you like what you become when you traffic in hate and meanness day after day? Do you want to become a rabid pit bull in a dogfight against the liberals and conservatives?

Venom and hostility are toxic, addictive vices. Remember, you don't have these toxic, addictive vices: they have you.

It's time to go cold turkey on bashing, slashing, and trashing those we oppose. It's time to kick the hate and hostility habits.

The facts are friendly to freedom. It's time for warm, rational conversations FOR libertarianism. It's time to persuade.

Dr. Mary Ruwart is a leading expert in libertarian communication. In this column she offers short answers to real questions about libertarianism. To submit questions to Dr. Ruwart, see end of column.

How much regulation do libertarians want for drugs?

QUESTION: In a libertarian society, how much regulation would there be on recreational and pharmaceutical drugs? Next to none? Would manufacturers have to show that a drug is pure, or safe for human consumption? What if recreational drugs became significantly stronger -- would the libertarian stance be the same?

MY SHORT ANSWER: In a libertarian society, manufacturers would have to compensate victims whom they defrauded. Obviously, selling someone a different amount of drug than advertised falls into this category. Claiming that a drug was pure when it was not would also be fraudulent.

Killing customers is bad for business; companies don't profit by selling something that harms people. Before the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), companies took great pride in their brand names and advertised their safety record to attract customers.

Without the FDA, companies that produced drugs (either recreational or medicinal) would likely seek third-party certification. Independent companies would test products for a fee and give their seal of approval if products met their standards. Discriminating customers would buy only drugs which carried such a seal.

Those who couldn't wait for the seal (for example, patients suffering from terminal disease) would still have access to new drugs. Today, AIDS and cancer patients wait 10 extra years for the manufacturer to jump through FDA-imposed hoops, which unfortunately do little to make drugs safer. (For details on this, see Chapter 6 of my book, Healing Our World. The 2003 edition is available from the Advocates, and the 1992 edition is available as a free download.)

The marketplace already "regulates" electrical appliances this way. The UL certification mark is the seal of approval from Underwriters' Laboratories, a private third-party certifying agency.

Our drugs would probably be safer with such testing, since today the FDA does no testing of its own, but only "approves" what the manufacturer submits.

LEARN MORE: Today, all around us, there are plenty of examples of successful market testing and certification programs that work better than heavy-handed government regulation.

One-Minute
Liberty Tip

Simple But Effective

by Sharon Harris

Clarity and simplicity are powerful. One colorful metaphor can often beat a truckload of carefully-reasoned position papers.

I'm going to suggest one very familiar cliché. It might seem obvious, too ordinary to even mention. But it is both simple and powerful, and right now is a perfect time to use it.

The Obama administration is assaulting our economy with a bewildering and unprecedented array of threats. Higher taxes. New regulations. New bureaucracies. New government controls.

gooseOne way to begin an argument against all this is to use the old phrase "killing the goose that laid the golden egg."

This simple, time-worn saying, from the classic Aesop fable, carries a wealth of information and creates a vivid, easily understood picture in your listener's mind.

You might say something like this:

"With all these new regulations, taxes, and controls, I fear the government is killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

"It was free enterprise and the free market that made America the freest and most prosperous nation in the world. But now I believe the government is acting in a very reckless manner that threatens the very foundations of that freedom and prosperity."

Of course, you'll say it in a natural and conversational way, in your own words. And you'll then supply whatever other information is needed to back up your basic argument.

This old metaphor has survived because it works. It alarms the listener -- no one wants to see that golden goose killed, after all. And it creates a vivid picture in your listener's mind: the free market is the goose, and the golden egg is America's great prosperity. And the government, with its characteristic greed, short-sightedness and crude tools (the axe), is threatening to ruin it for all of us.

Sometimes simple is best. Try the "golden goose" analogy in your next conversation on current events.
