Avengers: Endgame took the world by storm this weekend. But it seems that the professional victims have some complaints about the movie. These are not complaints about verisimilitude to the comics. Rather, they whine about how the movie offended the sensitivities of illiberal crybabies. In spite of the vast representation of identities in this masterpiece of a film, there is no way to satisfy professional victims.
There Will be Spoilers, but Not Yet. I Have Something Everyone Needs.
These calls for sensitivity are truly attempts to revoke free speech. As Jeff Deist points out, Political Correctness has nothing to do with decency. Rather, it is about control. One can easily define political correctness as “the conscious, designed manipulation of language intended to change the way people speak, write, think, feel, and act, in furtherance of an agenda.” Political Correctness is Real. It is illiberal.
Political Correctness ruins our culture. Case in point, Avengers: Endgame is a cultural masterpiece. It is a 3-hour celebration of 11 years of cinema. The Marvel Cinematic Universe deserves this pat on the back. Instead of celebrating with us, “journalists” have dedicated themselves to being a victim. Because of this mentality, because of this refusal to enjoy life, the social “justice” crew opts to police Endgame’s choice of jokes.
This is not how a healthy human being behaves. You live in a world (every complaint about Endgame I have so far encountered emerges from the First World) with profound growth. You are blessed. Endgame is a celebration. Don’t ruin that for yourself by looking for offensive content. The fact that you can even see this movie shows exactly how blessed you are. Humanity did not always have the affluence to enjoy entertainment.
Spoilers Ahead: Do Not Read if You Don’t Want to Know Plot Points of Avengers: Endgame.
The world celebrated the Endgame, but Gavia Baker-Whiteclaw of The Daily Dot saw no cause for happiness. Why Thor’s weight gain was just SO offensive! It would take the “journalist” who believes that Spider-Man is not a hero because he is a straight white male to take issue with the jokes about Thor being fat. According to Baker-Whiteclaw, “Marvel presumably wants Avengers: Endgame to have a long shelf-life, but this meanspirited recurring fat joke is going to age very poorly, very fast.”
Imagine believing that making one of the most powerful Avengers overweight is “meanspirited.” To view that as evil, one would have to be so overly-sensitive that they would view the inclusion of one of the Russo Brothers as a gay character as homophobic (oh wait). To state the obvious, making Thor fat was funny. It violated our expectation of what the movie would entail, and it allowed for fantastic humor.
Perhaps one of the more disgusting remarks from Baker-Whiteclaw was how she claimed that this was trivializing trauma. As someone who has experienced trauma before, I can attest to the fact that laughter can be therapeutic. One could view this as offensive if it is at the expense of others, but this isn’t even that. But Thor is not fat and sloppy (well, perhaps at the beginning). By the end of this movie, however, he is large and in charge.
Life is too Good to be Offended All the Time
There was nothing offensive about Fat Thor. Even if there was, so what!? Taboo subjects make for great humor. In other words, life is too precious to give your discursivity to the State-Linguistic Complex. You can either join in on the celebration, or you can force sadness upon yourself as these SJWs do to themselves. But why would you dedicate your life to misery when joy is so easy to accomplish?
