ASG.Stream is partnering with the Acton Institute to bring you the award-winning documentary film, The Hong Konger: Jimmy Lai’s Extraordinary Struggle for Freedom, to ASG.Stream.
ASG.Stream’s Executive Director, Justin Arman, comments, “We’re honored to be showing this film during the 34th Anniversary of Tiananmen Massacre. We hope to raise awareness regarding the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) human rights violations against Hong Kongers. And specifically, we want to tell Jimmy Lai’s inspiring story, which is incredibly important to anyone who values human freedom.”
This film tells the story of newspaper publisher and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai. Lai fled from China at the age of 12, and arrived in Hong Kong. Following the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, he founded Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s most successful newspaper. The film also explores the trajectory of the city of Hong Kong, from the “one nation, two systems” policy to total control by Beijing.
Lai became one of the most prominent pro-freedom voices in Hong Kong. “I owe freedom my life,” Lai says, and he stood up for the rights of every Hong Konger to enjoy that same freedom.
From the film’s official website, “THE HONG KONGER is a documentary by the Acton Institute. When Hong Kong’s basic freedoms come under attack, newspaper publisher and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai finds himself in the crosshairs of the state and must choose between defending Hong Kong’s long-standing liberties, or his own freedom.”
“Jimmy’s story is one that cannot die in a prison cell — it is one that must reignite a persistent movement to defend the cause of freedom for Hong Kongers, for China as a whole, and humanity everywhere. You can make a difference. Learn about the three ways you can get involved with the film.”
The film will launch June 2nd on ASG.Stream.
