I believe that people have a right to decide their own destinies; people own themselves. I also believe that in a democracy, government exists because (and only as long as) individual citizens give it a "temporary license to exist"- in exchange for a promise that it will behave itself. In a democracy you own the government- it doesn't own you. Along with this comes a responsibility to ensure that individual actions, in the pursuit of personal destiny, do not threaten the well-being of others while the "pursuit" is in progress.
Zappa (1940–1993) was an iconoclastic American composer, guitarist, and satirist known for his genre-defying music and fierce independence. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he released over 60 albums blending rock, jazz, classical, and avant-garde sounds, often laced with biting social commentary and absurdist humor.
Zappa was equally uncompromising offstage. He championed free speech, railed against censorship, and distrusted both mainstream politics and organized religion. Politically, he leaned libertarian, emphasizing individual liberty and skepticism of government power. Famously opposing the PMRC's campaign for warning labels on music, he testified before Congress in 1985, defending artistic freedom with sharp wit and clarity.
Zappa left behind not just a vast musical legacy but a lasting imprint as a cultural critic and defender of civil liberties.
