Grover Norquist

The anti-tax activist and founder of Americans for Tax Reform is known for his pledge that asks politicians to commit to never raising taxes. While identifying as a "libertarian-leaning Republican," Norquist's single-minded focus on reducing taxation and government spending has made him a significant figure in libertarian economic policy circles. His "drown it in the bathtub" approach to government has been influential in promoting the libertarian vision of dramatically reduced state power.

Sidebar: In 2014, Norquist made a wry appearance at the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. The setting, suffice it to say, is a long way from the usual circuit of tax policy conferences.

His takeaway? “Burning Man is a bunch of people who think the government doesn’t need to be here. Nobody told anybody to do this stuff. I mean, talk about Hayekian spontaneous order — this is, like, exhibit A.”
