“We believe that business is good because it creates value, it is ethical because it is based on voluntary exchange, it is noble because it can elevate our existence, and it is heroic because it lifts people out of poverty and creates prosperity. Free-enterprise capitalism is the most powerful system for social cooperation and human progress ever conceived. It is one of the most compelling ideas we humans have ever had. But we can aspire to something even greater.”
John Mackey is the co-founder and former CEO of Whole Foods Market, a pioneer in organic grocery retail. Under his leadership, Whole Foods grew from a small health food store in Austin, Texas to an international company, ultimately acquired by Amazon in 2017.
Mackey promotes Conscious Capitalism, a business philosophy that blends free-market principles with ethical purpose and stakeholder care. He co-authored Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business, which urges companies to pursue higher missions beyond profit. A self-described libertarian, he has advocated for limited government, voluntary exchange, and entrepreneurial freedom throughout his career. Today, he continues to write and speak on the future of business, leadership, and human flourishing.
