Here’s the problem: The citizens have become the enemy. When you’re standing in line at the airport and your shoes are off, your belt is off, and your personal belongings are being closely scrutinized, and you’re standing with your hands in the air, waiting to be patted down, do you feel protected? I don’t. I feel like I’m the enemy. And if you feel like you’re the enemy maybe you are. Governments sometimes turn paranoid. And they fear things. And sometimes the thing they fear the most is the populace. I want a government that looks at me as the citizenry and someone they are there to serve.
The controversial software pioneer and Libertarian Party presidential candidate embodied a flamboyant version of libertarianism. McAfee’s colorful personal life, combined with his uncompromising stance against government overreach, made him both a captivating and polarizing figure within liberty-minded circles. His vocal support for cryptocurrency as a tool of financial autonomy from state control resonated with libertarians alarmed by surveillance, centralized power, and inflationary monetary policy.
John McAfee’s final days were shrouded in mystery and speculation. In 2021, he was found dead in a Spanish prison cell, shortly after a court approved his extradition to the United States on tax evasion charges. Officials ruled his death a suicide, but the timing, along with McAfee’s past claims that he would never take his own life, and his repeated warnings about government persecution, led many supporters to question the official account. The lack of a definitive resolution has only deepened the intrigue surrounding his life and legacy.
