I’m a libertarian, so I have ideological—very ideological—beliefs. But interestingly, it sort of puts me in the center of some of this stuff, because I’m sympathetic to some of the goals of progressive activists. I talk about Black Lives Matter in the book. I agree with a lot of what they would like to accomplish. I think our criminal justice system is very flawed and has had a disparate impact on people of color. So it’s from a position of occasionally wanting the left to succeed—that I’m critiquing their tactics.
Robby Soave is a senior editor at Reason and co-hosts Rising on The Hill, where he provides sharp analysis on politics, culture, and media. He is the author of Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump and Tech Panic: Why We Shouldn’t Fear Facebook and the Future, both of which examine the tensions between activism, technology, and free expression. Soave frequently writes on civil liberties, higher education, and ideological conformity. In 2016, he was named to Forbes’s “30 Under 30” list in law and policy.
