Robert Nozick (1938–2002) was a prominent American philosopher and longtime Harvard professor best known for Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974), his influential libertarian critique of redistributive justice. In it, he argued that individual rights, rooted in self-ownership, place strict moral limits on state power and justify only a minimal "night-watchman" state to protect against force, theft, and fraud.
Nozick was also known for his wide-ranging curiosity, producing later works on epistemology, metaphysics, and the meaning of life that extended his influence well beyond political philosophy.
