Ross Ulbricht is a digital founder and freedom advocate best known for creating Silk Road, an online marketplace designed to enable voluntary, anonymous exchange using cryptocurrency. Motivated by libertarian ideals, he envisioned a decentralized system beyond state control. Arrested in 2013, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole after being portrayed by prosecutors as the mastermind of a vast criminal enterprise and allegedly linked to uncharged plots to protect the platform. His sentence drew widespread criticism as excessive, and on January 21, 2025, he was granted a full presidential pardon.
