Rush (Band Members Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart)

Rock Band
“You don’t get something for nothing, you can’t have freedom for free. You won’t get wise with the sleep still in your eyes, no matter what your dreams might be.”
— Neil Peart of Rush, “Something for Nothing”

Rush was a Canadian rock trio composed of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart. They were renowned for their virtuosic musicianship, complex compositions, and thought-provoking lyrics. The band formed in 1968 and reached its definitive lineup in 1974 when Peart joined as drummer and lyricist.

Their music fused progressive rock, hard rock, and later synth-driven elements into a style that evolved constantly. Lyrically, Rush explored themes such as science fiction, philosophy, individualism, and the human spirit. In their early work, especially on albums like 2112, Peart’s lyrics reflected a strong Randian influence, emphasizing personal freedom, creative autonomy, and resistance to authoritarian control. These ideas resonated with listeners who felt alienated by conformity and drawn to self-determination.

Over a 40-year career, Rush remained fiercely independent and earned one of the most devoted followings in rock history. Their legacy endures not just in technical excellence, but in the clarity and conviction of their artistic vision.
